5 Cylinder Legnum?

Morn,

Today is the day I pick up the car. I should be a lot more excited but due to an issue with the engine (please see quote below) I'm pretty worried about it. I have a reasonable understanding of how cams, rockers and valves hang together and wouldn't have thought the below was possible without some serious damage i.e. broken pieces.

After a lot of stuffing around with your car we finally found the miss J
At first we believed it to be the lead as it was one cylinder down,
and we had changed the coil packs with another vehicle and that ruled
out the coils, we had changed the plugs and this plug had a lot of
excess fuel on it, so we believed the lead wasn’t firing the plug,
after changing the leads the problem was still there, so we looked
further into the injectors etc but still couldn’t get it to fire on
that on cylinder.
So we decided to do a compression test to make sure the engine was
mechanically sound which came up fine.
Basically after a lot of fun we got into the engine and found that the
reason why it was down one cylinder is due to the fact that for some
reason it has actually shot the rockers (the run between the cams and
the valves and they are what open the valves)
Luckily the rockers didn’t foul on anything and doesn’t look like
there is any damage, so we have put them back in and it is running on
6 cylinders again, but it is something to look out for as whatever
caused it might happen again.

Hi Rob,

Sounds to me like a hydraulic lifter stuck shut (might have a little bit of sh1t in it). There's some oil additive that alot of guys here use to stop the ticking that is prevalent with our cars, will be searching later as will be running it from next oil change (Royal Purple or something like that I think).

Hopefully changing the lifters will fix it for once and for all.

When are you gonna post some pix or your schweet new ride?

cool. that makes me a little more comfortable. I plan on changing the oil and filter today so might grab some of that too. Autobarn/Auto-One/Repco stock suitable oil and filters?

Recommended Viscosity: 0w30 and 5w30 (Others have had success with other viscosities. Check relevant thread.)
Recommended Specs: Fully synthetic
How much you need: 4.5L
Brands: Shell, Castrol, Nulon, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, Fuchs, ELF
Filter Part No: Ryco Z56B or Z142A
Recommended Service Interval: 5,000 Km - 10,000 Km

I think you're referring to the ProMa additive? Yes it's been known to quieten the lifter rattle, though if they're that bad you need to use additive, it might be wiser to get them replaced.

Hmmm, you can put the additive in but that just means you can't hear the problem, not that it fixes it (that said rattly lifters aren't usually a problem, but sticking ones are). So I'd be at least checking the lifters and cleaning them all out and replace any that look sus, and if you go to that much trouble a new set is less than $300 so for peace of mind I would go a new set.... Depends how much cash you have I guess.

there are guides on here for cleaning them all etc.

Who doesn't change the filter when they do a service? 4.2L depends on what filter you use, if you use the bigger filter like I do(Z56B) then it is more like 4.5L, besides you get 5L which gives you a bit extra to flush the old oil through a little.

I wouldn't leave it much past 5,000 Km myself.

Skint tight arses, and special-price-for-you $19.95 log book servicing joints.

But that's what Mitsubishi specify when using the specified filter, so just getting the correct info out there.

Or people who don't give a toss about looking after their cars. I'd change the plugs too if it were easier to get to them, I do in my other car at every oil change.

The problem is, if you say 10,000kms.. then people wait until they get to that before they start thinking about a service and by the time they get around to it it's blown out to 15,000km and your oil is rooted and your engine is starting to get damaged. And that's assuming they have the forethought to top up along the way.

Oil and filter done last night. the undertray is a pita to take off and put back on for sure. took it down to the car wash and gave it a quick scrub, over to the relos for show and tell and then home to pick up the mrs for some shopping. she drives it home, gets all teh way to the car park no dramas, gate goes up and i showed her the folding mirrors button. played with that for a bit, goes to drive into the carpark and she runs up the gutter. doh. little bit of rash on on the drivers front rim.

Goes all right though for a 1500kg car

when i spoke to the dude yesterday he said it wasnt a stuck lifter - the rocker arm was just sitting in the head. nfi how it got there. He has only seen that with a car bouncing off the limiter or too much boostage. weird.

Stepping out of the starlet into the leggy, which is only one year younger is pretty fucking awesome. There's not so much a gap now hopping off the bike and driving the car

oh and the thing missing off the dash when the car arrived was a air fuel ratio meter. hyper-R brand or some such. - there was paperwork for it in the back. fucking pelicans indeed.

that would explain why my car came through unscaved this time. i wonder if he was the cocksucker that stole all my stock parts (wheels, exhaust, suspension etc) from inside my first legnum?

was he charged, or just sacked?
