actual cost of importing

Hi guys, its getting closer to the day where i can actually look at importing a galant or legie.

Im just wondering about how much it has ended up costing you guys that have already done it. I keep seeing really nice examples pop up with estimated landing and complied prices under 20k but im just concerned with what can go wrong and if there are any hidden costs i should be aware of. Still a bit unsure and nervous about the whole import process as i have never imported a car before.

Cheers,
Leigh

That's just landed.

Extras I had to look out for to get it rego'd and roadworthied.

Front brakes: $780 (replaced with DBA 4000 series slotted rotors however and new pads for RWC. Everything else passed)
Roadworthy Certificate: $70
Repairs to the body/colour coding: $400 (broker chipped in significantly to the rest!)
Immobiliser/Alarm: $650
30 days' temporary permit (with VicRoads): $65.00
Registration + Stamp Duty on $10,000 + Transfer of old plates to this car: $1187.00
Insurance: $105 for the first month with Shannon's
Tint front windows with "Tint Professor": $120

So all up, an extra $3,300-ish to get it on the road, which is what I'd budgeted for. Don't forget the first service (check/change all fluids) to make sure everything's cool.

But the again, in the grand scheme of things the Super VR-4 cost me about $17,000 the way I wanted it. The stereo is another job I need to complete ;)

I would say to allow somewhere from $15,000 to $20,000 for all on road costs. Obviously each car is a different situation, but this a rough estimate for the average VR4. Prices increase for the likes of facelifts, recaro seats, super VR4, momo wheel etc... and another killer is the colour, some can be pushed very high when they are red, blue or green.

The old saying 'If you can't afford to own it, you can't afford to buy it' is very true about most imports, so allow a bit more in your budget than you think.

Great, just what we needed - another Leigh! :p

My additional costs have been quite low:

$1k - registration for a year
$400 - immobiliser
$1.2k - insurance for a year
$360 - service

The only other costs I've had are non-essential extras. When I went through, I made sure I had at least an extra $5k to cover onroad costs + any issues that could have arisen. So far so lucky (except for needing a new battery) and now I'm able to start buying the fun stuff. :D

$950 Rego for a year
$450 Alternator (rebuilt)
$812 Stamp duty
$130 Battery
And hopefully the insurance will cover all my costs for my cracked bumper dented hood. Which is a absoloute prick to get quotes on.

Even if the boat sinks, maritime insurance covers it doesn't it? (unless of course, they charge you for the salvage operation!)
