Auto Gearbox Gone? :(

Today I was driving and when I was changing gears it would rev to about 4000 and then change. I thought this was odd but I kept driving to my appointment none the less.

When I had to go park up a ramp my Galant wouldnt get out of first and just rev the hell out of it and not change gears. I had to tell everyone to move out so I could reverse down the ramp.

Went to my appointment and then drove home. My car was flashing in N and said it was in D in 3rd gear, but it was actually in 1st the whole way home I guess my gearbox is gone now...? Correct? Anyone know what to do? already been to wreckers for another gearbox and its gonna cost $1000 just for it No labour or anything........Werse day of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would try doing a Fault Code Check and seeing what it comes up with. Then also try an ECU reset.

yeah ecu could be confused, i would reset it. mine did weird things when the fuse went on the gearbox.

for now, check all fuses, when my gearbox fuse went, it was with the fuses under the drivers kick panel, then disconnect battery to reset ecu. see how it goes then.

Don't do an ECU reset yet. The Flashing gear light is telling you something.

Also check the level of fluid in the gearbox. You could have a leaking torque converter seal (common) and have now run down to a low oil level. I have one here that I'll sell for $700

You won't be able to change the gears while its in limp mode (Neutral light flashing). Turn the car off and on and put it in gear again and see if it turns off

Usually limp mode throws you in third so it being stuck in first is odd

Car still not going. Wont get out of first. When its in first it just revs and doesnt move....hmmm. have reset ECU. oil levels are fine.....? where in Christchurch can I go that will know about it ?

There could be a few things causing that but i'd say its f'd

I could probably have a look at it. As far as mechanics that know what they're doing with these cars, I don't know of any. Although rumour has it that Donnithorne Simms know their stuff.

Definitely sounds like your transmission is rooted.
Time for a rebuild.
