Hi guys,

I've been lurking around for a while and I am a full member of clubvr4, I currently own a FL legnum and live in Germany, with my wife and 2 year old daughter, working for the British Army as a vehicle mechanic.

I've always dreamed of emigrating to Australia since I visited in 2003 for a rugby tour of the east coast (Sydney to Brisbane) with school.

We'll facing redundancy in the coming months I have started the ball rolling! I'm in talks with an immigration agency, and they reckon I could easily get a job with Coates Hire as a diesel fitter.

The only question now is where do we want to live? I love the idea of Queensland, probably around the sunshine coast. The wife has been researching different areas but I thought I would ask on here for advice on areas to avoid, or really nice places, my only stipulation is not in a city, it would have to be a suburb, and preferably near somewhere I can windsurf!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I can't wait to get out there and start again on a blank leggie!

Thanks in advance,

Julian

Welcome Julian, I am sure that you will love it over here. I am sure one of the resident Queenslander's can fill you in on the details you are after. Would love to see pics of your current leggie.

Welcome Julian, I'm no help to where to move to as I'm down south. However someone else mentioned they were a diesel fitter the other day, I think vr4cobra. If so, he's in Queensland and may have some employment tips for you.

Hey mate, welcome.I'm in the Army myself, I'm a grunt though, but I am looking at transferring to vehicle mechanic in the coming years. Have you had a look at getting a job in the mines as a diesel fitter, or even a small engine mechanic, the pay is huge,$90-120k a year, there is work in Mackay on the North Queensland coast between Brisbane and Townsville, Not too bad of a gig.

Beaches on the Sunny Coast are excellent. Check out Coolum.

Come to the tweed coast, its cheap and nice. Far less shootings/stabbings than Sydney or goldcoast lol

Welcome Julian,

Depending on what sponsorship you get on your visa and if they will pay to transport your household goods in a container you could fit your Legnum into it and bring it here. My cousin and her husband did it with their admittedly smaller Yaris. (You don't tell the company sponsoring you that you're putting your car in the container you just put it in)

I know you are talking with a migration agent (and have probably already put money down so this is all probably pointless) but my mate is working on becoming a migration agent (almost finished the course) and he works for his dad who already is one and a Lawyer, If your interested send me a PM.

Doesn't mean you have to come to Adelaide but if you were interested in FIFO work the southern suburbs (Port Noarlunga) to Victor Harbour and anywhere in between would suit you and you would be here in time for the Olympic Dam expansion (which should happen).

Good luck with it all.

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcomes.

We've not put any money down as yet, its a 457 permanent residency visa we will be applying for.

The companies are offering to ship our belongings etc, but I'm not sure it's worth putting the car in, its been a U.K. car all its life and as such has seen a lot of salt. Plus I was told it would take roughly 18months and $8000 to import. Having looked through the sale ads on here it seems the going rate is around 10,000 for a car that has never seen salted roads!

I did look at the FIFO jobs in the mines, and was tempted by the pay, but I'm leaving the army to get away from the extended periods of time away from family, in the last 7 years I have spent just under 796 days away, most of which has been very short notice, less than a week. I want to be around as much as possible whilst my daughter grows up! So a 9-5 job suits better, and the salaries I've been offered are more than twice what I'm currently earning!

This is the only pic I can find on my phone at the moment, but mine is indigo blue on the left.

Have a talk to Kristian @ http://ironladyimports.com/ to get an idea of costs for bringing your car across. He's also a sponsor on here from ironchef imports

No worries Julian. I think my cousin and her family are the only ones to ever go back to the uk so you'll probably be here for life :)

Legnum looks nice.

Good stuff mate, I know what the Army is like on your family so I can see where you are coming from. Best of luck with everything, hopefully you can be over here amongst the convicts before too long :tongue_smilie:

Yeah army life can be very hard on family life! Missed my daughters 2nd birthday party yesterday, thanks to one of our tankers springing a leak on the flight pan with 5 Belgian Augusta's an hour out for a refuel! Was just leaving work when I got the call. 4 hrs later 15000 liters of fuel split between 2 other tankers and I finally got home in time to thank people for coming.
Might be coming sooner than planned if this keeps up!
