We were very lucky, our house and street escaped damage but CBD and some suburbs are pretty messed up. Still getting the odd aftershock which is tough on the nerves!
Yeah, the damage has been pretty bad. Our chimney came down through the veranda roof and all over the driveway.. narrowly missing my baby! We had a drive through town this morning before they'd cordoned most of the streets off, and the damage there is amazing. There's a lot of old brick shop buildings that have just crumbled.
We've been getting nearly hourly after shocks of between 4 and 5ish, but they're saying that it likely we'll get one big one yet over 6!
yeah, been here since early May. Not driving a VR-4 though (yet ).
Glad you're ok, sounds like my work on Madras St suffered a bit of damage (big glass windows down one side are gone apparently) so might get some time off this week
Fingers crossed that big aftershock doesn't show up!
Does NZ have earthquakes often? The reason I ask is that so many of the damaged buildings are made of brick. In California (where I grew up) they almost never use brick because of the earthquakes. It doesn't flex at all so it just cracks and crumbles.
Almost all of the damaged brick buildings are from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Since a large earthquake we had in 1931 (or there abouts), the building standards have been changed a great deal. We're actually a very geophysically active country as the only reason New Zealand is here is because of the interference between the indo-australian and pacific tectonic plates.
