HI guys,

In need of some serious help. Last sunday when i was cruising on the highway i herd a high pitch noise then a bang and the engine cut out completely. I put the car in to neutral and moved over into the emergency lane.

After inspecting the engine i found that a pulley that guides the timing belt had come loose and melted its way through the timing belt plastic cover and blew out. The issue is now that the timing belt has come loose and pistons have obvisouly smaked the valves and are now bent, being an assumption.

Tomorow we are taking the heads off to inspect the damage. Just wondering if this has happen to anyone else.

Not sure where to go from here wether i rebuild the engine or slot a new engine in.

Will post up pictures tomorow of the damage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

scotty

damn.. sorry to hear about this..

might be best to get a half cut.. prices isn't much difference anyway.. also that way you have other parts you can sell and get some $$ back..

good luck and I hope you can have your car back on the road soon rather than later..

I agree with Christian, half cut will probably be the best bet. Easier in all likelihood as it will just be a straight swap with no repairs needed and you can also sell other parts as mentioned.

Without seeing it it would be hard to diagnose, but from what you said, 1 thing springs to mind. THe bolt that secures the pulley to the block has failed. I've seen it happen but not on these engines.

As the guys have said, front cut- while you're at it, change the pulley's timing belt and water pump on the exchange engine, that way you know they're good when it goes in.
Sorry to hear it, it's a terrible feeling.

As what Jungle said. However, probably a good time to get some spare heads and have a bit of work done to them (basic port job for one)

I'd just stick with this engine. If you get a front cut your going to need to somehow get it there, strip it, keep the frontcut laying around for a while, sell bits etc.

I'd take the heads off and get em fixed up but that's just me.

Also, doing the head's will just be quicker. Heads off, get em fixed up (or aquire another set) put em back on. Done.

I think before you go all cowboy and pull the heads off, re-secure the timing belt and marks and do a cylinder leak down test. This will tell you if the valves are bent.

I'd be very surprised if the timing belt has become loose after a pulley failure for an engine not to have bent valves and damaged pistons. But you won't know until you pull off the head.
Your choice Scott, realistically, even if you had lightning fast reaction time and were able to turn off the engine, is highly likely you'll have at the very least bent valves. I wouldn't chance it, or go to the effort of re-fitting the timing belt, you've also then got to sort out a bolt for the failed pulley and helicoil it.

If it were me, pull the head, have a look, it will tell you what's going on straight away, then depending on the damage, decided whether a front cut or new valves/pistons is the way forward.

Hi,

Thanks for the replys. Still haven't had time to pull the heads off. Been in contact with the import dealer that i bought the car off, and they are been really good about it and are going to help me out in some way. I bought the car 3 months ago and have only done 3,000k's on the motor, which came with 83,000kms.

Will take the heads off and see what the go is with it and see what path i should take. I have called a few engine importers and seems that there aren't many 6A13tt around.

cheers for the help,

scotty

Hi there mate.

This thread has me with my tail between my legs! I have had a rattling noise coming from under the timing cover since I bought my Leggy. From further inspection it turned out my timing belt was excessively loose. To a point where I can lift it off a few teeth on the gear. However I wouldnt expect this to be a possibility. My car has done done 170,000kms however a belt was done at 100,000.. This serious has pushed me to not drive my car again!

This should NOT be ignored. Pull the car off the road and take everything off until you can see the culprit.

A $140 genuine OEM Hydraulic tensioner can cause $2000+ damage if it fails. The hydraulic tensioner is a common thing to fail in both magna's and 3000GT's.
NEVER, EVER EVER EVER use a cheap chinese tensioner! They are horrible from the get go and as above, are keeping your valves away from your pistons!

Even if the belt was done at 100K, and not by you, there is a possibility;
- They didn't change tensioner pulley's
- They didnt change the water pump
- They didnt change the hydraulic tensioner!

If your going to do your 100K service, do it all!
Best of luck!

do your self a favour and just pull the accessory belts off. had a nice rattle noise at the top of te motor after doing the 100,000km on my car.

turned out it was one one of the accessory belt pulley bearings was stuffed and that somehow resonated and sounded like it was coming from the top of the motor.

the car will run fine for a couple of minutes off battery charge while you test to see if its the problem
