Dead transfer case

Look, it's probably the wrong terminology but the part of the gearbox that sends power to the rear diff has lunched itself. Can these things be purchased as parts? Are there rebuild kits?

Or do I have an expensive and attractive lawn ornament now?

Cheers,
Jimbo

Ouch. That is indeed the transfer case.

Not sure, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the EVO models has the same transfer case?

Someone on here with a front cut might have an extra one?

You could try kempys in NZ (kempys.co.nz), they should have one (no idea of cost though).

Also, PM Just Plain Nuts, he may have the one from the Galant he has.

cheers

Lee

Jim you need to try to find either a transmission or a complete engine package to dismantle. There are a couple floating around Oz atm. Can't remember if Trav has sold his or not. Otherwise you'll have to import from NZ which gets expensive 'cause of shipping.

I do indeed still have mine, complete. Unfortuantely I'm not willing to separate the transfer case, hence my failure to reply until now.

Just so you know, the transfer cases are all the same from 96 to 2002 and auto/manual. Should make finding one easier

Should be able to take it to a gearbox specialist and have it rebuilt!

Thanks for the replies lads - I'll start looking.

I seem to remember that when we had Mel's transfer case repaired I was told that the internals from the AWD Magna are pretty much the same and various parts are interchangeable.

take it off and find out exactly what needs doing first,

i blew my rear diff, but when i took it out and inspected it,
only damage was to the pinion,

$100 for the 2nd hand part,
vs
$500 for a 2nd hand complete diff

read on one mod list someone had an evo 7 transfer case somehow installed, along with a few other parts from the 7. Afaik, evo 7 has acd? Im sure its been posted here before saying not possible.

Yeah EVO 7 has ACD. A few people have EVO 7 diff's and the internals from their gearboxes though.

Will it be the same build as the tiptronic version?

I've got as far as dragging it home. I was kinda hoping for my service manual to arrive before I started, but I guess that's not likely.

I'll get the car up on stands on the weekend and start pulling things off.

how did it die? Lack of maintenance? too much power? or just plain F$^%&ed up?
