Disabling the turbos (6A13TT)

Hi All

I am thinking of disconnecting the turbos as I share this car with the GF.

I was told it will cost $100 to just open up the waste gate or $500ish to put in a boost controller and some type of switch to either turn the turbo off or on minimal boost and to turn it on higher boost when I drive it.

The fella also said this may either use more fuel or save fuel depending on which way we go.

Does anyone know or can advise if this is recommended?

Thanks in Advance

Jay

I wouldn't touch the wastegate at all or even get anyone pro to touch it. Stock boost is as low as you'll get and as far as switching them off; these ecu's are only setup for forced induction. For eg - blow an intake hose off and then try to put your foot down; it doesn't work.

Get a super AFC which gives the ability to tune the air flow signal and hence get better fuel eco; or better still a Haltech interceptor which gives the ability to tune timing and fuel.:)

I too share your problem.

The car runs at "base boost" from factory which can spike anywhere up to and occasionally OVER 10PSI!!! EBC means it can't reach this point if you tell it not to

I invested in a Dual Stage boost controller.... Low is 6PSI (The car physically will not let it go any lower, but the electronic controller means it doesn't go higher than this) and high at 13PSI

Low for her

High for me

:D

Boost control will only affect your fuel consumption if you are actually ON boost.... Boost is created by throttle resonse. You can take your car to redline without bringing it on boost, just be light on the accelerator....

Josh's idea of an inteceptor or SAFC is your best bet for better fuel economy

Like the boys said, don't muck around with the wastegates!!!

Jay why in the world would you buy a VR4 if you don't want a turbo car?! :banghead:

Adding turbos to a NA engine isn't just a simple case of strapping one on - there's quite a bit you have to do to ensure correct fuel delivery, timing, AFRs etc. If you literally bypass the turbos so they're not spooling at all, then they'll actually DRAG on your intake air flow, inhibiting even NA performance, which I'm sure I don't need to tell you is a Very Bad Idea.

If you use an electronic or even manual boost controller (EBC or MBC) you can set it to 5psi or something which will ensure minimal boost and thus minimal performance, so this would be the easiest way to go. Please be aware however that these cars are set up at the factory to run rich and there's no simple way to retune them - the ECU can't be altered by a tuning shop. So if you want to improve fuel efficiency you'll either need an electronic fuel controller (such as an Apexi SAFC II) or an ECU piggy-back like the Haltech Miniceptor (allows tuning of both fuel and timing, which is even better).

Finally, just about ANY turbo car can be driven as though it is NA simply through careful application of the throttle - so drive like a granny and you'll see quite low fuel consumption and the car won't scoot off and scare you ;)

EDIT: Dawso you sneaky bastard! :P

To reduce boost, use less of this:

:P

On a serious note, when your GF wants to drive it, just take her for a good hard spin around the block ensuring plenty of time with 3 bars of AYC and say "now just don't do that".
She'll probably never want to drive it again, and stick to her car :ROFLMAO:

**Note - she may never want to be in the car with you driving agian, and you then have a Designated driver ALWAY - double score!

If your car is an auto, just wait until the gearbox blows up, then the car will be really slow

(sorry couldn't resist!)

My wife always drives it on full boost setting, but she is pretty handy behind the wheel. She'd probably outdrive most of you girls anyway..:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

My girlfriend is too scared to drive fast. I just tell her to leave it in auto with TCL on and she'll be fine. The TCL on these bloody things is so intrusive it's like impossible to go remotely hard. I turn it off as soon as I get in the car unless it's storming or something and im not game to gun it at all, although with the 4WD and AYC it already makes it an easy car to drive even with the power. I think i could give it to my brother who is just about to go for his red P's, and he'd be ok (not that I would).

nooooooo a twin turbo car driven like a granny :(
seriously mate my mum drives my car and see is sweet with it, i have watched my boost gauge when she drives and she dont even make any boost.
so if you want better fuel Eco, sell it and buy a hybrid car. cause with a vr4 good luck with the economical mission

Like what dawso suggested use EBC, at least both of u can enjoy it..

For economy.. Use safc and tune it properly

The big question is how often you want to be able to switch between high power and low power.

If it isn't often, the a simple way to do it would be to adjust the throttle plate stop so that you can only get 75% - 80% throttle.

This would basically give you a situation where it just takes longer to accelerate up to speed, but you still get the benefit of load based boost (i.e. you wont just sit there going nowhere if the car is full).
