Hey all,

Just thought id introduce myself. Dont have a Legnum just yet, but hope to have one within the next 6 months. Just starting to do a bit of research atm. Need to trade the Challenger in a few months time and hoping to replace it with something that has a little more in the handling / comfort / power department.

Will possibly be looking for a unicorn, but iill be looking for a manual 2000+ legnum with less than 85K on the clock. With any luck itll have a moonroof, recaros and maybe one or 2 mild mods. Not in a rush, so hopefully something close to this will eventually come up.

A little more about me. Im the Vice Pressy of the FTO Club and live down the South Coast of NSW. Have owned about 14 FTOs now (do a bit of wrecking on the side). Apart from the Aero, i also have another one im converting into a ute. In the process of putting in a checkerplate floor atm.

As I cant put up any Leggy piccies, ill chuck up a few of my 99 Aero....

Bought this one at auction in Japan. Have done quite a bit to it now and am at a point where I dont want to run the kms up on it. Thatll be where the Legnum comes in. Im currently running 132KW at the wheels (stock FTO is 100KW), so a stock Legnum should be fairly comparable.

Anyway, hope to be putting Leggy pics up not too far down the track when I pick one up.

cheers

Welcome to OzVR4 Dwanye,

Nice little FTO, good luck with the hunt for the leggy, if we can be of any help let us know....

Thanks, im sure I will have lots of questions that club members will be able to help with. At this point im looking at putting together a list of what I looking for. Will need to take one for a test drive as well as I havent been in one before. Got quite a bit of time before I need to move so all good.

One question. From what i have read, Legnums didnt come with cruise control. Is this correct.

Yep, thats correct, one of the only 2 critisms of the cars design, IMO

but there are aftermarket fixes for that one

Welcome to the site & good luck with the search.
Stock power output is a little lower than your modified output, but is all 4 wheels not just the fronts.

& yes you're right they are all lacking cruise control. The one BIG thing they missed.
I installed a system on my prior white one & it worked a treat. The best mod you can do for long trips because that rright foot gets very numb!

Welcome Dwayne.

Very nice looking FTO you have there. Is it the version R?

The FTO was among the cars I was looking at before I settled on the VR-4. Like you suggest, the VR-4 just has far more practicality, comfort and refinement than the FTO (the FTO's rear seats are a joke!). The bonus is that the VR-4 is also the faster accelerating car.

One area where the VR-4 is behind the FTO is the engine note - the FTO sounds great screaming in the mivec zone, especially in a tunnel.

Come to a meet and I'm sure that there will be a few members who will be more than happy to let you jump in their cars for a spin.

You say that you have time on your side. If so, I'd suggest you consider importing a VR-4. You'll generally pay less for a better car that way.

What have you done to acheive that power level in the FTO?

Manual VR-4's with a high flow cat but no other mods tend to have around 155-160kw ATW. Whack in a boost controller, exhaust and intercooler and you'll be at 180kw or so.

I'm probably having a mind blank but what is the 2nd criticism of the cars design? Out of curiousity. :)

If you're a Galant fan, it's the Legnum wagon rear. If you're a Legnum fan, it's the Galant boot. lol

Some would also criticise the fuel economy.

Not me, always get high 8 through to very low 10L/100k's, always
other than at track days..... then its 32-38L/100k's

definitely cruise control and turning circle

Yeah the turning circle is pretty bad, U turns are like a distant memory :P
Oh and hello Dwayne...welcome to OZVR4! (Knew i was forgetting something lol)

I once had to sit in the back of a old Honda Prelude with another bloke for a half hour or so drive. I'm like 6'1 and i felt like I was stuck in a torture chamber, had my head bent over looking at my legs cause I could only fit in the car up to my shoulders :P Having the car full of boxes of random crap for moving house didn't help either...every bump i basically had to have my hands bracing against the roof to stop my neck kinking against it, really not cool.

I used to call my FTO a people mover. The rear seats are really quite practical for a car of its size. Probably the roomiest 2+2 I've been in.

You mustn't have ridden in many 2+2's.

Having sat in the back seat of an FTO on a long journey, I beg to differ. Check this out:

"This Mitsubishi is strictly a 2+2, with room for only toddlers or shopping in the rear seats."

http://www.mitsubishi-fto.org/info/reviews.htm

"The rear seat - well, the rear seat might as well not be there! With the front passenger's seat set in a fairly typical position, I could j-u-s-t squeeze three fingers between it and the lower cushion of the back seat..."

http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_108700/article.html

"Rear seating is cramped for adults"

http://www.reviewcentre.com/review7321.html

"I had a Mitsubishi FTO GPX prior but got rear ended so that's a write off - it was fun to drive. I have a little boy (3 yrs) and the FTO was getting a bit cramped anyway!"

http://mrtperformance.com.au/forums/archive/index.php/t-2799.html

I'm guessing you're smaller than a 3 year old boy then ;)

Back on topic, Dwayne, did I read your original post correctly in that you're building an FTO ute?! Geez! That might sort out the rear seat space!

Welcome, Dwayne. It is good to have you aboard.

I'll let you make up your own mind about who on this forum you should ignore. ;)

Very nice looking FTO you have there. Is it the version R?

Yes it is, but it a limited edition one. The Aero is a Version R with all the options, so it has the LSD, light up kickplates etc.

the VR-4 just has far more practicality, comfort and refinement than the FTO (the FTO's rear seats are a joke!).

True, but then the FTO wasnt meant to be practical. Having said that, my six year old fits in the back just fine. I have a floating DVD screen back there, so he is quite happy. Going to keep the FTO though. I have a Mitsubishi Challenger atm. Its a boat. We thought we would need the 4WD for the property, but it just hasnt turned out that way. Petrol for the Challenger isnt cheap either (but then, maybe that has something to do with how I drive it). So the Leggy will replace that.

Come to a meet and I'm sure that there will be a few members who will be more than happy to let you jump in their cars for a spin.

Thats very generous. Just out of interest, where do you normally meet. I work in Canberra, but live at the bottom of the Clyde on the South Coast (near Batemans Bay).

You say that you have time on your side. If so, I'd suggest you consider importing a VR-4. You'll generally pay less for a better car that way.

I did that with the FTO. I have had a bit of a chat with Iron Chef already and may end up going down that path.

What have you done to acheive that power level in the FTO?

Well, a stock FTO puts out about 100KW ATW. I have done the following to get that to 132KW ATW:

ARC Airbox with UAS silicone intake pipe.
Custom Airbox enclose and CAI routed to the front bar
RPW Extractors
High Flow Cat
Custom Dual Exhaust with 2 x tripple flow mufflers
Haltech Interceptor

The nicest thing about the Interceptor is more KW and 20% better fuel economy would you believe.

but there are aftermarket fixes for that one

Well, aftermarket Cruise it is then. You much are you looking at for something like that?

Some would also criticise the fuel economy

I must admit on the Fuel economy thing im having a bit of a hard time trying to compare that to the Challenger. At the moment, the Challenger uses between 1/4 and 1/3 of an 80L tank to travel the 150 odd kms from home to work. How is a legnum likely to compare?
