Hi guys and gals. My name is Glenn, from Adelaide and I am new on this forum. (Been lurking for a while reading up)I have just bought a black 2002 Type S Galant with 102k on the clock after denying myself one for 2 years. (I was checking carsales and gumtree 3 times a day till the GF told me to just go out and get one:)I mostly have had 6's and 8's all my life but I really fell in love with these Mitsi's back when i bought an old HH Vr4 Galant a few years ago.
I didn't have for long (18 months), it had a bigger IC and was running 14psi but boy did it go and it just handled so well. It wasn't too big... it was just the perfect little car. Sold to a young bloke who was grinning from ear to ear.

So have finally upgraded and got one of these new ones.
This one is fairly stock, extremely well kept, just with lowered springs and shocks and a set of rims.

Just had the big service done.
Plans are:
get Evoscan working....
slightly taller springs in the front (nose is scraping on everything)
Exhaust
EVO paddles
Quality stez + amps
Boost increase + tune
Remove rear spoiler/fix holes
Brembo's
That will do I reckon, nice subtle daily that goes hard and stops.

Couple of questions if I could:
The wheels sit quite inboard. Thoughts?
Seems a bit restrained in 1st and 2nd gear until you punch it into 3rd, then it seems to get the full amount of power. Anyone else get this as well?
How worried about this wave spring should I be? Realistically with a mild increase in boost is it required the $1300 to fix? (I know... 3.5k for rebuild). I really look after my transmissions, is really that weak/prone?
How does the shift kit go (especially if I go with the paddles!)

Will get a picture up tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

Hey glen, welcome to the forum.
Might want to add intercooler to that list, factory unit is a bit of a weak link.
And as for wave spring i dont think it matters to much what boost your running i have heard of it failing on stock cars. Some get lucky and never have a problem. If your not going to do it, at least make sure the tranny fluid is flushed like every 20k or so, and a tranny cooler is recommended also.

Welcome aboard.
Read the wheel offsets thread.
As for boost, it's load dependant.
Don't own an auto but from what I've read, you have every reason to be paranoid. Fix the wave spring and planetary gearset sooner rather than later.
Make friendly with Jonson, he's your local specialist mechanic.

Thanks for the replys!
Ahh hadn't thought about the intercooler. Better put that on the list.
The trans already has a cooler fitted. Was a good selling point in my eyes when I was looking at it. Previous owner had one fitted when car was imported as she went into limp mode after a long drive. Sounds like from what everyone says, I just have to bite the bullet and do the trans. I plan to keep the car for a while and its a good piece of mind I guess. Its a shame we can't send the bill to Mitsubishi.
I will read that thread on the wheel offset for info. (Dont know how to work out what the offset is on my current rims?). Can't see in the photo but the wheels actually sit inboard of the flares by about 10-15mm. Might tell me whether the Brembo's will actually fit. To be honest, I had never even heard about this offset thing being good or bad until I started looking into the more modern stuff. Same with "giving it some low" :) New terminology for me!
Man, I love these cars. I even like the name V R 4. It just sounds fast.
Thanks again.

Welcome, take the wheel off, there might be a number or a sticker telling you the offset, I would guess +45

Id say the offset would be in the +30s, so +35-+38

Yep, that sounds about right. I have Evo 9 Enkeis (which are +35 or +38 I think) and with out arch flares they sit pretty much in line with 235 tyres. Arch flares would add the 10-15mm that he's stated.

welcome to ozvr4 . all the info you need is here somewhere

eg:

http://ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.p...ook-here-FIRST. (index to lots of good stuff)
http://ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.p...ommon-problems (common issues/fixes)
http://ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.p...rum.-MUST-READ (all the info about these cars and their varients)
http://ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.p...taged-Upgrades (staged upgrades)

and if you're wondering why you cant post a new thread, its cause you hav to be a donating member, which is $5.

i think that covers everything...most of that should keep you reading for a few nights. again, welcome :)

also, your wheels are going to be about 17x7 or 8 +42 or +32. what size tyres are on it?

im going to ignore the raising thing and pretend you like it that height. adjust your driving, not the car lol

Welcome mate, looks awesome. The CR Kai's have the size/offset stamped inside one of the spokes.

Awesome ride! I cruised with this car once about half a year ago, was an older guy and we exchanged thumbs up. Clean car indeed

welcome glenn, let me know when you're ready for a decent sound system as i couls help with the gear due to working on these cars alot

sweet ride by the way

cheers jeff

Welcome!

I can chime in on the shift kit and that side of things: The shifts feel more direct and possibly a bit faster, but that could have just been down to my transmission being due for a flush anyway. I'll never know. As far as driving the car, that whole process was more just for peace of mind since I could give it the beans without being terrified of the trans popping.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!
I've tried to join up using both methods shown in that thread but it won't let me??
First method - "paid subscriptions" doesn't come up in my menu of the left...
Second method - just takes me a page showing "OzVR4 does not have any paid subscriptions available to which you can subscribe"
I'm using a mac so does that have anything to do with it?

Thanks for the advice. I have have re-arranged the plans for my car and first cab off the rank will be the transmission. (I read somewhere the MV Auto's is a good place to go for this?) It really struck a cord about giving it a flogging and one day the trans suddenly starts shifting funny and I start imagining bits of wave spring slowly working their way through my gearbox... good advice.
I did the tiptronic direction swap on the weekend and for anyone who hasn't done this.... DO IT (y). Much much better just flicking the lever back while exiting a corner.
Rims have 225's on them and I'll get one off one day to check the offset. Had the 100K service done  so exhausts and stereo's are gonna have to wait for a bit. Lol Paulie, I told my mate about higher springs in the front.... he slapped me..

Took the lady for a spin through the hills the other night. She's no beginner when it comes to cars (her current ride is a turbo'd MX-5) and her impression is the same as mine. These cars are SCARY. We still can't believe just how comfortably and easily these things tackle corners. We were going BS fast and it wasn't even looking like raising a sweat (2 bars of AYC only ever once). I actually have to constantly tell myself to slow down cause we are just going so quick....
Thats the one thing that has got me baffled about these things. Why isn't everyone buying them? WHY? Is it a secret? For $10-18K I can have a honest four door sedan mini supercar. Even if the running cost are horrendous (I'm yet to find that out fingers crossed) you would still have change from the +$35K you would spend on a brand new SS XR6/8. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just still in the honeymoon period, but am I the only one who thinks like this?!!
Its fair to say that this Galant is living up to everything I expected from it and much much more. I am one very happy new owner. Catcha out there!

Well we all like them also thats why we are here :)
Why isn't everyone buying them? Poor after market parts availability compared with other makes and high running cost scare a lot of people away, and many people simply dont know these cars exist.

Hi Glenn, we're in the process of doing some work to the paid subscriptions, thanks for your patience while we get things done. I'll let you know once its operational again.

Hmm, to can relate to you mate. My first impressions were exactly like yours, I was amazed by the car. However over time you will realise it has very little top end and it's a very heavy car. It's still a great car though, but it has many weaknesses also.
