Hey.

Just dropped a alloy radiator in my vr4, old primary fan shroud is to big and after tryn to die grind it down a lil and breakn it in true naki butcherism styles, i thought i could still use the other but can't get it spinning. I take it the thermop fan switch is in the main fan? Has any1 done a fan upgrade here/ got a circuit diagram for the fans? I've ordered to ice 12" fans to go in but dont realy wana run them on a switch... Any help will be rewarded.

Derek there's some discussion of thermo fan replacement in a couple of other threads, I think one of those is Simon's Members Ride thread. Search is your friend :)
 
Try Simon (Jungle)'s and Carsten (Gly)'s Members Ride threads. Simon didn't replace his fan, but mentions a source of some slimline ones, I can't remember what other discussion there was in there. Carsten DID replace his with slimline units, so there may be info in there for you.
 
the thermo control unit is the box thing with the porcupine heat sink on it,

i used this and just made a custom mounting bracket for it and mounted it in the same-ish location,

and just extended the wiring from it to the new slim fans....

just wanna ask about the oem fans..

i know our fans are piss a$$ weak.. but how much air does it move per minute? can't seem to find it..
 
with mine,i went and got a pair of ford xr8 thermos.they flow so much air. it took a bit of cutting and rewiring but now as soon as the ignition is switched on,they come on and stay on always.not had one problem with them in almost 4 months they been on.(y)
 
The runs are permanently running? That isn't very good. You still want them to be thermostatically controlled if possible.
 
That's not difficult, just add a relay controlled by the thermo switch (assuming you've buggered up all your original fan wiring).
 
OK, so now I am going to HIJACK this thread.

Both thermo fans on my car seem to not be going. I can hear the relay trip and the fans click "on", except that that don't turn.

What should I be checking first, given that the relay is tripping, or should I just skip to the chase and get two new thermos?

I ran a search, nothing came up on issues with the fans, apart from a how to thread on fixing a broken fan. I'll check to see if this is the issue, but any other ideas?
 
Joel I seriously recommend against getting the genuine fans, they'll be way too expensive for what they are, especially when you include shipping. You'd be much better off with some aftermarket slim-line ones :)

BTW I can understand one of your fans failing, but both at the same time is pretty weird... You know one of them only comes on with the aircon, right? I'd get an auto sparky to take a look if you're not good with electrics yourself - no point replacing the fans if there's something else causing it! (I'd be looking at the relay first, just cause it clicks doesn't mean it's not creating a circuit)
 
I'm unsure of the circumstances of them not working, as it is on my new facelift, and this is how the car arrived from japan.

I'll get the guys who are doing my timing belt and water pump to have a squiz, and I'll go some slim line units if the stockers are dead.
 
does anybody know the part number for the thermo control unit, mine has melted itself so need new one
