Front diff - what is available?

after stripping my auto box to see what i had broken, i'm thinking about rebuilding it, and putting in a new diff, as firstly, you need to open the box to get at it, and secondly, it's a open centre.. so surely an LSD exists for them somewhere.. cusco perhaps?

also, are the diffs interchangeable between auto/manual?
i dont want to buy a nice LSD, to find i cant use it if/when i convert to manual.

Mitchy: I'll also be stripping down my old box (when I get it back) to see what is screwed and if it's worthwhile for a rebuild as a spare. Keep me posted with what you find ;)

mine broke the planet gears (all 3 are stripped) in the second planetary gearset...

i've currently got the box spread out across the shed floor, so i'll take some photos of how it all looks.

^awesome work! :)

Mine just had about 1/2 a kg of aluminium in the fluid, so nothing went bang but it wasn't gonig to be long. I'll be interested where you source the gearset from and how much $$ it is

The front diff is located inside the transfer case. The diff in the gearbox is the middle diff. The middle diff will have a viscous coupling (VCU).
I think they are all a bit smaller than EVO.

that doesnt sound right...

why would the they call it a transfer case if its a front diff...
and i was under the impression the middle diff sent power to the front/rear diffs, which is what the transfer case does, making the front diff in the gearbox.

Honest truth. You can take my word for it, I have seen it all before.

I will find pics for you if you can be patient.

i dont dis-beleive you,i'm just trying to understand how it all works..
this is my first auto, and awd car.. so i'm not 100% on how it all works, but i'm pretty mechanically minded. :p

i've currently got my box sprawled out on the shed floor, and it appears to me the front diff is in the box, but i've been known to be wrong once or twice before. :p

You can't use tradiational Cusco / Kaaz style lSD units in an auto box as they are not compatible. You can use a Quaife type unit as they are a mechanical differential, not clutch style and as such, aren't effected by auto transmission oil.

There is no specific Quaife unit at this time, but if you were to send me your dfferential we can measure it up and quaife can make one to suit. This is a ATB differential, slightly different to a LSD but has the same effect.

ok.. so you're saying it IS the front diff in the gearbox?

i might be able to bring it up to you some time, as this is a spare box/diff now.

so would it be possible to put a evo LSD in a manual and if so what evo, evo VI??

They look identical to me from Evo IV on, but i dont know of anyone doing it. Also the SAYC rear diff can be fitted without any major issues.

On the actual gearbox side of things, when we fitted Brads Evo gearset to the VR4 box, one problem was the output gear being different. http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23202&highlight=evo+gearset

That along with the different ratios makes me think there may be different ratios in the transfer case?

And yeah the 'front diff' is part of the transfer case.

Nahh, the transfer case will be fine :) The output gear was different because the final drive on the evo's is shorter thats it
