Looking to replace the front and rear struts & shocks and struts on my 1997 Legnum ST-R (EC5W).

I would prefer to stick with an OEM suspension setup, however, I am aware that BC Racing has coilovers that will fit.

Does anyone know what US-imported cars shared the same setup?

This chassis uses the exact same setup as the 2G DSM awd suspension. Im running Coilovers from a Eclipse.

I suggest the KYB's get new top hats also and re use your springs>

Turns out the front KYBs for the 2G Eclipse are an inch shorter than the OEM Legnum shocks, otherwise, they're a perfect fit. In my attempt to install these with the OEM spring, my spring compressor got stuck in the spring when I decompressed it. I'm assuming it got stuck because the spring is a bit too long for the shock. I ordered the Monroe shocks which are slightly longer (but slightly worse in quality rip). I'll provide updates.

I ended up going with these. https://www.rhdjapan.com/largus-coilover-suspension-kit-spec-s-ea-w-ec-w-ea1a-ec5a.html

Alright yall. I decided to get the coil springs for a 2G Eclipse (MOOG coil springs) because the OEM Legnum springs were too long. The Monroe shocks were a no-go, still too short, but I still used the KYBs since they're higher quality. I had to do a bit of fabrication to the lower coil perch to make the coil fit (probably a Moog design flaw). Other than that, pretty simple shock/strut assembly.

One important thing to keep in mind is that that pinch bolt indent on the shock needs to be in-line with one of top strut tower bolt mounts, otherwise you won't be able to mount the strut correctly.

It'll ride a bit lower now so that's pretty neat!

Whew!

And after all this fuss, I installed the assembly and it's absolutely slammed (lmao). I gave it a test drive anyway. I made it out of my driveway and then promptly reversed after I realized it was scrapping too much.

I'm just gonna buy coilovers instead xD

I like how you guys in the US come to the same conclusions as we did 15+ years ago :) was hard trying to find dampers that fit here in AU and exhausted all options hence we jumped straight to coilovers.

With coilovers, spring rates can be subjective... But the vr4 is very heavy at the front.

My first coilovers were 8-12kg/mm for the front, and was just terrible. If I wasnt quick enough to react to a pot hole, i just closed my eyes and hold the steering tight to wait for the thud of the bumpstop. Was just dreadful to drive. Considered even putting my stock suspension back in tbh.

My latest coilovers are now something like 18-20 kg on the front, much better ride and handles way better. Plus if i forget to avoid the pothole, its not that violent thud.

Sometimes I feel like a bit of a trailblazer for the Legnum in the states :D

You got 18-20kg on the front, what rates do you use for the rear?

Yeah, it’s been a voyage of discovery picking through 15-20yrs of dead links and overlapping ideas/standards as they evolved here and on CVR4.

Most of the aftermarket abandoned the chassis so finding the last hold outs has been difficult. That and getting folks to ship to the US is nearly an exercise in futility these days.

Good tip on the spring rates. How bad are your roads typically? My car came with Tein Flex w/EDFC. Running stock rates and 9/16F 8/16R makes our shit roads manageable 2/16F 1/16R comes out when I’m carving up smooth rural roads, but it’s painful otherwise. I’ll likely have them revalved and resprung when it’s time for them to get serviced.

These are the specific coilovers i have, looks to be 18 front and 7 rear.

Other thing, my old isc coilovers weren't long enough at the front (ran out of adjustment). The MCAs i reckon i can achieve stock height if i wanted. This is a big tick for engineering cert here in AU if you wanna be legal/not get picked on by the cops. (Need to provide evidence of 2/3 travel if original suspension amongst other things here in South Australia).

Pretty much the reason I snapped the forum up when previous owner was interested in passing the forum on. Wanted to make sure the info doesnt go to the ether.

Everyone will be driving in their shitbox Chinese EVs (or antigravity cars?) and i'll be still driving my VR4. So when I'm old and senile, I can remember how to maintain my rust bucket.

8th gen galant/legnum was a grey import only here. Support isnt great here in AU but places like TME Motorsport have done loads for aftermarket here in AU. Getting stuff from Japan (shipping) is easier too.

Shipping to/from the US is just expensive as hell.

Shithouse. Given the cost of registration amount of 'safety' cameras to snap you...

In suburbia and out in the sticks too.

For example (not my footage):

The sign is put as a liability thing so you cant claim damage. But to have a pothole in a 110km/h zone...

Photo attached of a rim I cracked hitting a pothole in Victoria a while ago at 110km/h (no warning sign like old mate had in the vid).

What tire profile do you run? I have the Largus springs 12k front and 6k rear. I run 225/40/18 and don't really have issues with bumps. I do avoid certain roads around here for the potholes we have. We are famous for our potholes and corruption. 🤪

Looks like MCA's dealer company in the states is called Springrates. The specs on the coilovers they have for the Galant/Legnum are 12kg front and 8kg rear.

Damn

I run 12/6 on my car and have no issues in Chicago. I do run a low profile tire in the spring and summer and then the standard tires in the winter. Obviously in the winter it's a little bit softer because it's more of a profile. My summer tires are 225/40/18

Is 12/6 a rough ride with the summer tires?

Here in Rock Island, IL/Davenport, IA, our roads aren't any better than Chicago lol

It's not too rough. I mean your occasional pothole and you kind of hold on for dear life but that's normal for us Midwesterners. I like to take mine to the track and I'm a fast driver already, she handles beautifully through the turns. Mine do have an option to soften the dampener or hardening it, going full soft is a much better ride but less handling on the big turns.

I have already replaced all of the front control arms, bushings and sway bar lengths as well. I just turned 80,000 km yesterday.

Next year we should meet up in South Beloit at the Blackhawk Raceway. It's about a 2-hour ride from you and me.

Pfft. I drove smoother routes in Baghdad than St Paul has.

Per Tein’s site my coils are 8/5. Wondering how the damping would react with something stiffer.
