I'll be holidaying in the land of the rising sun for a couple of weeks, heading off next month.

The plan is to stop by Tokyo, Kyoto and the snows.

Is there anything in particular that I should be seeing or doing?

Any general travelling tips for the land of the rising sun?

Yes, I already know to steer clear of the sake and the school girls!

*actual tip removed so as not to get banned*

You've mucked up a bit and missed TAS. I'm hoping to get there next year for that.

I'm in Tokyo at the moment. Bring some warm clothes, it will be much colder when you are here.

Actually clothing here is quite cheap. I bought two new jackets for about $50 in total. Be sure to visit Uniqlo in your first few days and you can get some new clothes really cheap.

Depends what you like doing. If you like looking at stuff, check out the Imperial Palace in Kyoto- the gardens are just bullsh*t brilliant.

If you want to check out the last traditional style village, go to Tachiyama. You can catch a train from Kyoto ( seeing you'll already be there) go for a day for stay for a few. we had nothing booked, and stayed in one of the temples not far from the station in lonely planet guide. :)

Don't be scared of catching the train, particularly in Tokyo, there's maps in english and everything on the train cycles thru japanese and English.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the tips, gents.

I'll make a mental note to check out some of the castles and gardens. Japan's rail city system sounds like the opposite of Shitty Rail here.

Brad, do they even sell that old skool console? If I recall correctly, it was a slow seller from new!

Now for the most important question, where do I go to rent an R35 GT-R? Lol!

They would in that Akhiribata place, where all the electronics stuff is in Tokyo! Hehe nah don't worry about it.

Can you take a photo though of these supposed vending machines where they purchase used schoolgirl underpants? I've never seen proof, only rumours lol..

I'd be thinking that you would probably want to hit some serious eateries when you head up north. I've read that the food there is freaking amazing and will knock your socks off.

Then again, I'm obsessed with trying new foods, so I might be slightly biased :D

An old work mate recommended walking up Mt Fuji, if that's you cup of tea.

I'll do my best to get a pic of some used school girl undies. No guarantee that they will be from a vending machine though.

Steve.

I'm a big foodie too so will be gorging myself silly over there.

I'm very keen to see how Jap sushi/sashimi stacks up to what we get here.

Friends who have been there before have warned me to prepare for some strange dishes, such as horse sashimi!

Hmm. When I go to Japan I'm eating plain rice for a week.

Seems like not the greatest place in the world for a vegetarian.

Going to try some whale Bruce???
After all, they're killing so many of them to satisfy the demand for it lol...

The only kind of whale eating I approve of is whale eating for scientific purposes ;)

I'll be trying a lot of the local cuisine but if it had to be harpooned or hacked up alive, I'm not interested.

Poisonous blow fish though sounds tempting (and dicey).

Looks wicked Irwin!

I take it that these drifting meets aren't going to be in the official brochures from the tourist centres in Japan? Lol!
