Hey Guys,

I just got the worst call ever! The kind ppl at Kamikaze Motors inform me that the Gearbox Casing of my legnum has a crack in it!! At the moment it is sealed up with salastic! Anyone got any good recomendations???

Do i buy another box? Do i try and buy a Case? Anyone got a good Jap parts place they can recommend? Maybe some even has a spare gearbox?? (Not sure why they would though!)

Does anyone know how the case can break like that?? I haven't actually seen it yet (might try tomorrow after work!) but i've never heard of a cracked case. Any help is good help! Cheers

FNFASTVR4 on clubvr4 had the same sort of issue, he took it out and had it welded i believe. Might pay to have a look at his thread/s

It would depend on the size and what not, but it can be done, on a manual box anyways. But it is cast aluminium so it needs a specialist to get done right. I had some welding done on my intake manifold a while back, and got a welding school instructor to do it, and it turned out great.

If you do the work yourself, you can do it fairly cheap. If its an auto then i wouldnt be as confident stripping the internals out..

either that or start having a look in NZ, Kempys, mitsibishi partsworld and whatnot, but i personally wouldnt like a second hand tiptronic, i am wary enough of them as it is :P

I would check with FN FAST as well if it is a manual. As Mike said, not too keen on doing it with an auto!

If Kamikaze has told you it is broken, make sure you get a second opinion before doing anything drastic. Just sayin'....

What he^^^^^ said I think someone on here had trouble with them a few months ago. But dont be too fussed on a tippy secondhand if it is cheep enough you can get it rebuilt and you may even be able to get a quicker responding and stronger trans out of it.

Thanks guys,

think i might definately have to make the trip down to kamikaze to see it. The car is a manual so i'll have a look at FNFAST's posts.

Cheers

Had a look at the gearbox on friday. It looks like the drive shaft for the passanger side has broken and taken a chuck out of the side of the box! This is my guess anyway. The crack/hole/not really sure what... is covered by silastic and doesn't allow any clean sight to the exact damage.

Has anyone every heard of this before?

Does anyone know how strang the alloy case's are? ie. is this theory possible??

i had FNFAST's gear box welded for him,
got it done at a good engineering place for him, thru my dad.

its cast alluminim, so its hard to weld, not impossible,
just make sure you take it to s good engineering place that know how to weld cast aluminium.

no issues fixing it, and no issues since.

only hassel is taking the gearbox out and taking all the internal out.
