Hi all,

1st of all a big thank you to the guys and gals that came up with the internet, internet forums and this forum. If not for them, forums such as these would never ever exist and all of us would be reduced to driving along, slamming on the brakes and doing a quick (y) & U turn to catch up with the guy going the other way with the same car as yours.

You may think this dumb but take it from me, having had a car in a country where there were only 4 other similar cars the scenario I've mentioned is all true. Took me a long time to track down the other 5 cars too!

So well done ozvr4.com founder.

I'm now the owner of a soon to be delivered 01 VR4 Legnum bought at auction last Thursday with the help of Ben at J-spec. Thank you Ben.

So I guess I'm getting on this forum early so I can get all my questions in before the car arrives.

I started looking for a wagon some months ago just before moving house knowing that I will be having to drive 120 km a day from home to work. The 2010 Q5 will have to go. Great car but the distance means the equivalent of taking my wallet out each day when I get home and flushing all the cash in it down the toilet. Expensive cars are not meant to be driven ridiculous distances daily for long periods.

Found out about Legnums and said 'that's my kind of car' ie plain looking cars that surprise.

Having previously owned a Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo overseas and considered importing it on my return to Oz, finding Legnums and Galants can be imported makes up for not having the Airtrek anymore.

I'm looking forward to the arrival of my car from Japan. Until then, can someone please answer the 1st dumb question I've got? Just how many Legnum VR4s were ever made? At some stage, all well engineered cars start to become collectable. Usually it's only after a lot have been crashed, scrapped or neglected that they become truly collectable. So I'm curious how far down the line are VR4s ?

PS I'm having a couple of bumper stickers made for the car when I get it. One will have 'TARDIS 2.0 © ' and of course a pic of the Tardis on it. Anyone else interested in having such a sticker is welcome to contact me for one so I can order an extra.

PPS The Tardis is Dr. Who's time travel machine - bigger on the inside than on the outside and it can go where you wouldn't expect it to. Describes the VR4 don't you think? :D

Welcome, what specs is your Legnum? There is a thread with the build numbers some where, the rarest ones are the Red Super Galant then the Red Super Legnum

Hi David

At this stage what little I have is that its a 2001 AWD Type S TB. Here's a link : http://www.j-spec.com.au/auction/2001-MITSUBISHI-LEGNUM-2179999.html.

I've tried to figure out what TB stands for but can't find anything on it. I've got heaps to do in between now and getting it registered, starting with finding a stereo to replace the one that was ripped out of it. The photos sent to me looks good and there doesn't seem much else that needs to be done at this stage but I have a mate whose just arrived back from Mongolia with stuff gone missing so I'm not counting on the car arriving with everything as shown in photos.

That said I've gone on a RORO myself once to collect a car of mine that came off perfect so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Welcome Pete..they are an awesome car...first thing you would want to do is save up for a 100k service..mine came with those kinda kms and i spent $2600 on the 100k service..never had an issues with my car and it drove smooth..best money i spent in order to make sure my car could handle more power..
Also get the Lower control arms checked as they tend to be problematic and a few members have had them fail..beside that its up to you what mods you wanna do but if you're telling yourself that your not gonna mod the car and keep it stock..good luck!! haha :)

Hi David,

Found the thread you mentioned. I had tried several other ways of searching for that info but for some reason hadn't tried 'build numbers'. Anyway, I see from one of the posts that the numbers built for "EC5W LYGF W75 Galaxy White Tiptronic 5 Speed" was 2570. I do find it mildly amusing how some members seem taken up with differentiating cars simply by colours!

Well I guess that explains why VR4s are unlikely to ever be truly collectable except perhaps Red Legnums and Red Galants. It may not be long before there starts to be a rush of Red VR4s mysteriously appearing. Reminds me of the guy who bought a genuine Bugatti front axle for 1500 pounds and built himself a whole Type 37 from that one front axle (see Nov 2011 edition of Classic and Sportcar mag).

Thanks Nathan,

Yes I aware of much of that info on that link already. I haven't figured out what TB stands for though.

I don't know the answer to your question about smacking a kid but here's one for you - if you were to choke a Smurf, what colour would it turn into?

Thanks Aamir,

I had read on a UK forum that most people in similar situation would be doing what I think they call a D service. I guess that's the same as a 100K service but I've yet to find out where I can get that done in Victoria. I know the Nissan dealers do look after the skylines that are brought in privately but I don't know if Mitsubishi will do the same.

With the mileage I'm going to end up doing mods on the car wouldn't make too much sense so it'll stay stock standard. Anyway, if I were planning to keep the car long term then keeping it stock standard tends to preserve value much better long term for most cars. I'd expect Legnums will be the same in time.

Well Pete you will most likely be better sourcing the parts for the 100k yourself..you can either email Bill from ralliart NewZealand (bill@teamralliart.co.nz) or meek automotive from Sydney...Bill prices are very good and shipping is no more than 3 days...many of us here have used him with no complaints..I still use him for my Rcolt parts..there is also heaps of info on here in regards to the 100k service...and everyone's view of what consists of a 100k service differs...so read around...

Or Jon on here sells a kit at a decent price.

Have myself just taken delivery early last month of a white 01 Legnum through Ben at J-spec. Things went great overall and Ben was extremely helpful. Obviously some things are out of his control but to my surprise I kept my "inner cargo" (orignal suspension and other little things) on the back seat and the compliance centre Ben referred me to gave me no dramas about 'certain' things and expedited the registration process in a flash.
Regarding major service car parts check out http://www.camskill.co.uk/m22b0s0p0...EC5W_EC5A_Parts_Tuning_Spares_and_Accessories.
I ordered on a Thursday and the stuff arrived from the UK on about Monday or Tuesday the next week. For 224 pounds I got timing belt, the wheel tensioner things, hydraulic tensioner, the 2 drive belts and water pump.

Hi Pete & welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your new toy when you get it :)

Thank you everyone for the tips. And the welcome.

Welcome aboard mate! I'm more curious about the 1970 Morgan 4/4 you have there ;)

Oops. I hope I didn't cause a server crash. I've no idea how to paste a pic on reply

OK my car is due to arrive from Japan next weekend. There's going to be heaps to do starting with Aamir's recommendation for 100k service parts from Ralliart NZ.
Gavin, my 1970 Morgan 4/4 is the same car as the one on the cover of Peter Wherrett's book.

Also Bill does not work for Ralliart NZ anymore and their prices have gone up..but good news Bill works for another company now and he can still supply us with parts..his new email is bill@teamralliart.co.nz
