HID's Too Bright

Hi Guys,

My Leggy has HID's that were installed in Japan. These are great for me but are really too bright for oncoming drivers! I need to fix this, but am not sure how so if anyone can help me out with the following questions that would be great!

1 - Were these a factory option or has someone put an aftermarket kit?
2 - Can they be adjusted down? If so how?
3 - What other options are available to me to stop blinding oncoming drivers?

I have attached a couple of pictures that may help.

Thanks in advance!

Marc

that bottle top looking thing under the screw (visible in the pics) is what you use to dial the angle of the headlight up or down.
Just go out at night and with your lights on, turn them and you'll notice the angle of light change. Do this and you still get that awesome HID brightness without blinding people.

Oh, and Kudos to you for being a rare 'repectful of others' driver.

In regards to your questions....

1. There was no factory HID option. The only HID's that are suitable for our cars are the Cibie manufactured headlights ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

2. They can be adjusted down (there is a guide on here somewhere showing the procedure), however our reflector based headlights aren't designed for HID bulbs which is why you are producing a heap of scattered light which is blinding other drivers.

3. The only way you will stop blinding other drivers with HID's is to retrofit projectors into your headlights (be warned, this isn't a quick and easy job - google HID retrofit).

To avoid blinding other drivers, replace the HID kit you have with the standard H1 & H7 halogen bulbs.

It is good to see you're considerate of other drivers.

^^^ What he said

I put eyelids on as it didn't matter what I did, it was still blinding for oncoming drivers. I didn't have the cash to throw at projectors at the time so it was a temp fix that became kinda permanent. :)

It has helped A LOT put its still not perfect.

Thanks Darren, and sorry to sound dumb, but what is involved to revert back to standard halogen bulbs? Is it simply a matter of cutting the wires pre-ballast and re wiring straight up to the globe?

Hopefully you have a plug and play kit which means you can simply remove the entire kit (ballasts, bulbs, ignitors and wiring harness) without cutting any wires.

The HID kit will be plugged into your factory headlight bulb connector. Hopefully the right type of bulb connector kit was used which means you can plug your H7 and H1 back into the factory position of the headlight.

I'd disconnect the kit from your factory headlight connectors first, then replace the bulbs with the factory halogen set up (H7- low, H1 - high) to see if they work. If they work, rip out the HID kit but make sure you have traced all the wiring as there may have been seperate relays added when the kit was installed.

If it appears that it's not plug and play.......................... I feel for you.

There's nothing worse than rectifying someone elses DIY electrical install.

Thanks Darren - will have a look tonight. Cheers!

And failing all that has been mentioned above, and you don't want to cut the HID's out, there is a place that sells projector headlights for about $400-$500 AUD. Was linked in another thread somewhere, not sure exactly though, sorry.

just hope that the person who installed the HID kit didnt cut the harness to connect to the ballast...
