High Flowing the TD03

I've trawled this site & the pommy one for hours looking for someone that has actually high flowed the TD03. All I can find is "Yeah I knew a bloke that did it, can't remember where thou" type replies.

As you can image, I have absolutely f**k all space in my engine bay to go up a tub size (and to be quite honest, I really like the way she spools up so quick just as it is) so Im considering high flowing the OEM items for a few extra horsies. I've got a spare set of tubs (ex Mad Havs via qball lol) and have a mates rates shop that will do it for me. Im just trying to make their job a little easier by finding out what bits they can use. Ie compressor & exhaust wheel types, bearing types & how much / what metal to machine out of the exhaust snout etc etc.

Any info would be great!

I really don't see how they could be high flowed. You have obviously seen the size of them, it is a miracle people can get 200-225 KW's out of them!

There are a few turbos that will get you a few extra KW without being extra large. Also, i have seen a 6A13 FTO with a single turbo before.

Yeah, I dont want a big laggy single. It would also render all my brand new handmade pipework useless.

BradC's are highflowed aren't they, he should be along shortly to answer your questions.

heard a rumor of fitting T25 or T28 internals, could be old wives tale though

God, that thread is like all the other threads. Some good specifics to start with, then endless pages of general turbo upgrade wibble. Here's the useful information I found:

machine out the VR4 TD03 housing and fit a TD04 inside
The main issue is with the tiny diameter of the turbo outlet and with the thin compressor shaft
The weak link in the turbo is the compressor shaft which tends to shear at higher than standard boost
I've mentioned the compressor nut coming loose, which he seems to think is a problem with the shaft heating rather than anything more serious. He suggested finding the right Ball Bearing cartridge would solve a lot of issues.
Theoretically you could machine the housing to put a larger wheel in, but there is so little meat on the housing that practically you cant do it
Im just gonna take one down to my engineer & we'll see what we can work out. It doesn't have to be a big ball busting upgrade, I'd like to see what can be acheived a minimum off fuss.

I reckon I could have some compressor shafts made up from stronger materials too.

I know this isn't "factual information" but didn't someone one here get HKS turbo's fitted with a custom manifold?

I've been thinking a lot about turbo upgrades/high flowing the td03's the last few days, from what I understand to upgrade I'd need a custom manifold to even fit the td04L which was recommended by a mate who's apparently worked on Legnums/GVR4's, though this site ( http://www.roadraceengineering.com/gvr4upgradepath.htm ) doesn't say anything like that.
It seems like a better option to upgrade them instead of high-flowing if they fall to bits.
There was also a feature car in High performance imports magazine a while ago, which had a Gvr4 called "Captain Snooze", if I remember right they did a turbo upgrade though I can't remember if they changed the manifold over or not. I've found a few of the parts of the project car article online, but can't read it on my pc at the moment since I'm being shaped and can't even download 1mb without the download failing :( :(

Plus racing performance works was gonna do a td04 upgrade on the Legnum VR4, though they kinda stopped the project halfway through a while ago now and I haven't heard much about it since. http://www.rpw.com.au/shop/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=221&Itemid=40

Maybe someone here can shed some light on the turbo upgrades these feature cars went through after all if they had more work done?

Maybe TF035 (stock GT Forester and Triton Diesel) internals? They are smaller than the TD04, so might make it a bit easier. I think the TF035 maxed out around 130awkw on my Foz, so a pair could be fun.

This turbo discussion has been covered.

In short, how long is a piece of string? Tell me your budget and i'll give you some ideas.

The turbo guy next door to Meek had a look at upgrading the internals of our turbos but couldn't find anything and gave up. Not that this helps you though best of luck though

Mine are high flowed and my car makes 228kw at all four. Originally the compressor side was done as well but the compressor nuts came off on both turbos. I don't know if that was because they simply weren't done up tight enough or if there was some surging/flutter or whatever happening. It has been running fine for about 12,000km now though and I have tracked it quite a bit and generally thrash the car.

There is a difference in how the turbos build up boost, it tends to go off-off-off-on a bit-16psi, whereas the stock turbos on my other (completely stock) manual VR-4 feel like off-off-on a bit-build a bit more-8psi.

Still takes the same amount of time to go from a steady speed and throttle position to getting to maximum boost but it takes a little longer to do anything, then pushes you back really bloody hard. This could be due to the tuning on my Autronic ecu though.

Anyone spoken to GCG in Sydney? They high flowed a mates CT26 with good results and did some fancy stuff to my old laser turbo...

The RPW car was mine, check my garage for more details, in the end the ECU was wired up incorrectly and my auto gearbox was damaged so I went to another workshop to finish it off. Instead of the TD04's I went for KKR 280 twin turbo setup, has the potential to make about 300kw atw, probably making something like 275-80kw right now.

Cheers for the info guys. They're off the GCG this arvo, so we'll see what they say.

So what'd they say?

PS: I think I saw your car the other day, but buggered if I can remember where
