Guys I need your thoughts, I've decided to upgrade my MBC (GoFastBits) for 2 reasons - I've only one boost setting atm (12psi), but on some days I'd like to have 7psi on some other days 14psi :D - the second reason is monitoring the boost (I guess u could connect a boost gauge to a MBC unit?! I've got no idea)

Actually there is a third reason, but I'm not 100% sure if that is actually caused by my MBC, say I'm driving on the freeway, going to accelerate in 5th gear, but the engine seems to stop at 3500rpm and doesn't want to rev any higher very quikly... it takes ages!!! - this is only in fifth gear! Turbo lag?!?

I've found 2 units which caught my eye, HKS EVC-6 or Greddy Profec B Spec II. Well known brands, look good ^^ but to be honest I couldn't tell you the difference between those 2 =(

Now what I want to know of you is:

- Are they an overkill? Boost Capacity of both units 36psi!!!
- Is it really possible to tell the HKS unit you want say 14psi up to 100km/h and go down to 6psi while sitting on 110km/h cruising along the highway? That would be awesome!
-which one should I get - obviously they are different if HKS is $680 and Greddy $350 =)

HELP ME :crying:

Personally i am looking at getting the Greddy because i can hide it away in the coin pocket. Also i intend on getting a boost gauge so i do not need the monitoring ability of the HKS.

EDIT: That said i am not partial to any one in particular. if i can get a HKS one for cheap ill buy that.

Are they overkill? Put simply, No. They will give you a more precise way to control the boost you are running and the ability to change on the fly without doing the pull over and wind up shuffle. The fact they can handle upto 36psi is pointless in our scenario.

I have personally had the Profec B before and sold it; due to it being a little hard to tune/use for me.

I made the switch to Blitz iD III specR and have not looked back. I use it as my boost gauge, and it holds boost fantastically well.

My old mechanic used to have the HKS unit on his spec C STi and never had a bad thing to say about it. Although they are expensive, they offer good control over spiking and from what I have heard, gear based boost control. (which apparently is the only other controller bar the Apexi unit)

My 2c would be get a Blitz iD III; but if you are chasing the gear based boost and a little harder setup then I would go the HKS unit.

edit: This is taken from the HKS specs description:
- Dual Boost setting, enabling different settings for different conditions
- Map Correction Mode, can be tuned for: Throttle Position, RPM, Vehicle Speed, Throttle Position + RPM, or Throttle Position + Vehicle Speed.

I can't comment on the HKS, but the Greddy unit is basic unit that lacks any intelligence. If funds permit, I would recommend looking at a closed-loop controller instead. That said, once you get a taste for the increased boost you'd probably be happy with it and not worry about upgrading :) If you want more info about the Greddy then take a look at this thread.

EDIT: I bought Brett's old unit he referred to above. And yes, it was very confusing set up but after I realised half the settings have no effect it became a lot easier.

Personally i have every only played with the HKS item and LOVED it , but have heard good things from the greddy item.

Personally i would get the HKS if i was to spend that much. I guess its down to personal choice.

Price wise , have a look how much you can score them for from usa ebay too.

I have a iD III for sale too if anyone is keen!

I have the EVC-S and its a prick to set up, still haven't set it all that well. I thought it would be as easy as saying I want 14 PSI and it makes it happen. Turns out it doesn't. It says its easy to tune but i think its a bit of a prick. Suppose to be closed loop too I think.

I don't know is the EVC 6 is the same but it might be a worth while thing to be asking someone that knows.

On a side note, don't suppose anyone on here is an expert on HKS stuff? :P

Price? Condition? Pics?

From memory when I was looking to buy another iD III; Chris had both the boost controller and the optional extra power meter.

Or... you can buy one new, here is where I picked up mine.

currently running @ US $ 527.53

Also, on sale @ rhdjapan

Sale: $ 516.91

edit: As I said earlier somwhere... I use it as my boost gauge also. Sorry for the bad quality, Apple didn't see fit to actually put a decent camera in the iphone!
-shows realtime boost
-PEAK or HIGHEST PEAK boost levels also below the real time monitor.
-Can also switch to graphing mode

Looked up a few offers for Blitz boost controllers - cheapest iD III Spec R is US$490 shipped (local Perth price I've found is $799) and a flash Blitz SBC I-color Spec R for US$748 shipped.

Now they all have Spec S - single turbo or Spec R for twin turbo cars. But I assume a Spec S will do for us because we only have one solenoid?! Correct?

If thats the case the price for them will drop a fair bit again: iD III Spec S shipped US$449 and i-color Spec S $597

Tom,

I had the same discussion when looking for mine. Basically we all came to the agreement that a dual solenoid (spec R) will control boost better; but for all intensive purposes it doesn't really matter in our setup as yes, the controller won't really understand the difference.

However in saying that; my old car had a Spec R and I never had a drama, so I just spent the extra money.... and months later... still no issues or spiking with this unit. I regularly run the unit in full auto for my low boost setting; just dial in what you want + gain and it works out the rest with no dramas.

Basically the difference between the 2 is the "brain" of the controller, and the all important solenoid. Differences below:

This is the older model controller but runs the same solenoids: (take note the id III has a separate controller/display and ecu module.)

Come on guys - life is short  Spec S or Spec R?

Spec R ... do it... GO! :)

If you don't want to front the cash for a new one; chris was offering his at a decent price last time I checked.

Hmm, I thought I need a second opinion and asked 3 ebay sellers (all items from Japan). All 3 told me to go with Spec S.

So I will

Thanks for your thoughts Brett, but you weren't sure, I wasn't sure and no one else had an advice...

No worries Tom. Hope I provided at least some useful information.

Best of luck with it! :)

Of course you did, you brought me to Blitz ^^

This is what I'm going to buy in a week time (won't be home anyway, so I'm not in a rush):

BLITZ SBC I-COLOR SPEC S BOOST CONTROLLER BLACK 15081

It's less than $650 shipped, the cheapest iD III I could find was $490 shipped... I like the colours & the display :D

nice im jealous! little more than what i want to spend however you have inspired me to buy one now.

Looking at a HKS EVC4 atm.

Very nice Tom! The i-colour has some good rep. In the picture, looks to run the same solenoid unit. strange.... perhaps it only has 1 physical solenoid inside the hard case.

Either way, awesome!

100% Spot on with the solenoid comment.

Good buy dude... give us some feedback once its in!

I picked it up from the post office today and found out the complete manual is in japanese! Googled for an english version and found this translated unofficial version:

MANUAL BLITZ SBC I-COLOR BOOST CONTROLLER

I thought, just in case someone else is going this way, this upload may come handy for you
