I drove up to surfers on wednesday, on the way up the auto started to shudder on some changes ( undies turned brown ).
Today the speedo stopped working & the auto stopped having having tantrums. What is the link between the two.

Check all of the electrical connection that run to the box, there are 3 if I remember 2 on top and one at the rear. The rear one is the speed sensor I think, make sure all of the wires are in good condition and not worn and touching something they shouldn't. After that do a flush and get some new fluid if you haven't done already then make sure the correct amount of fluid in in the box.

Did the light go off on the speedo or did the needle stop moving? I would suggest that the likely fault is the speed sensor which runs out of the box as Matt suggested.

You do of course have the correct oil in there?
