Hey ladies and gents, I've got a leggy that sitting waiting at brisbane dock's. it's being held up because the car has got aftermarket rim on it, with the original rims and tyres in the boot. SO the car has been cleared for quarentine(spelling) but because it has the spare tyre in the boot, they need to drive it to another place to be quarentined(spelling) where they have more "man power" or soething along those lines..... so it's gonna cost me another $311 and another weeks wait... so i just wanted to know if this has happened to other people or are they trying to scam me..
cheers jim

Sounds a bit dubious to me. Try talking to your import broker or even your customs broker, they may know how to deal with it!

yeah i was thinkin of just chucking away the original rims in the boot if i can comply it with the aftermarket rim. the only problem may be that the aftermarkets are 18'...i'm a bit pissed that the import broker didn't discuss this with me before and that i'm doin all the leg work and have had to pay him $1100 for a finders fee... DON"T IMPORT CARS YOURSELF PEOPLE...... well maybe, i might have just said that in frustration..

Well lad you should live in NSW because mine came in with 18's and a bunch of other stuff and there where no issues at all.

most of us here have done self import through a broker iron chef or j-spec or equivalant. dont pay out self import just because of a simple tyre problem at the dock. sounds like the finders fee was more then the standard fee you pay to the broker/agent.

my car apparently had spare tyres in the back of it, i never had a problem at quarentine they took them out at compliance and i never saw them but they were just used tyres not rims.

get hold of your broker and get him to sort it, thats what you paid him for.

Guys this is entirely normal - I allow the extra money for steam cleaning in my landed and complied estimates, because quarantine in Brisbane knock back every single car from Japan.

Jimslick, my GT-R coming in has already cost me an extra $7K over my budget, so count yourself lucky ;)

actually i had a think about this and understand the reasoning of quarantine wanting to do this (i may or may not work a similar job ;)). You have just been unlucky and got a very anal officer who decided to play it by the book and send it for 'unpacking' so they can inspect the wheels 'properly'. I assume they have taken issue with the rims in the back of the car, not the car itself being very dirty?

Ive had 2 cars through brisbane now and not had any dramas, im not sure anyone else has had this problem either.....

yeah i'm hearing all of your comments and i understand that this isn't a simple process, just dealing with one person. there are many people i have dealt with who have all been helpful(but not telling the whole truth). i'm just a little pissed that when i've paid the transport/customs people then emailed them saying "i've paid your money, now if theres anything else please phone/email me to keep the ball rolling". then hear nothing for 3-4 days till i phone them wondering where my car is. "oh now it's got to be transported to another place to be unpacked then re-packed". well why didn't you tell me that when i friken phoned you. oh and i tried phoneing importer/broker but someones not answering their phone because of bad exchange rates...(rant over) i'm not pissed it's just a little frustrating when the process could be simpler..
cheers jim

oh while we're on the subject how about we put a thread up with good/bad experiences with importing cars, doesn't have to be a hate fest just things for first time importers too look out for. just an idea.

I think there's already one on here somewhere??

This is the time when your broker SHOULD be answering their phone - it's not like we're selling heaps of cars...

I've gone from 40 in the first quarter of this financial year, to 2 this month so far...

Trevor (SiliconAngel) has already written a guide. If there's things you think he should add, post in that thread and let him know.

cheers

And I'm not at all happy about people slamming importers publicly on the site as I'm not taking responsibility for that sorta trouble.

Why the hell would you go through anyone other than our own site importers anyway?!?!?1 Madness I tell's ya'!

Don't throw out ur stock rims ... its not so much compliance u have to worry about, its getting it registered thats going to be the problem.
If u can get tyres on ur 18's in compliance, u can borrow mine, or someone elses stock rims to get it over the pits ;)
As trounced said get ur broker to do the work ...

firstly i in no way shape or form ment to come on your site and start bagging importers. that wasn't my intention i was just a little annoyed at the time. as to the question about using the importers on here- i didn't know about this website or i would have definately considered one from here.
