Insurance? Who is best?

Hi Guys,

Firstly I hope this hasn't already been covered. Tried searching and couldn't find anything.

I am looking to buy a Galant VR4 manual and I am wondering what I can expect to pay for insurance per year. I live in Sydney. Who is the best insurer for these vehicles?

Also, this is the one I am looking to buy:

http://carsales.com.au/used-cars/pr..._Nne=20&trecs=4&state_id=0&__sid=11ED03A16804

any initial thoughts? Does anyone on here know this car?

I just sold my RVR and am tossing up between the above VR4 and a mint Evo II with 45,000kms for about $19k.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dan

That depends really depending on your situation where are for example; which suburb you live, your age, where you park your car during day and night time, who else will be driving your car . Then there is the modifications of your car, there are a lot of reasons.

But for personal experience on insurance, best insurer I've been was Shannons, then Just Car and third is Budget Direct.

Who best way you can do is call and get a quote and ask questions, ei. modifying your car...

Use their websites for online quotes :)

I don't think Shannons insures anybody under a certain age, so that'd also depend as well!

tom, you are quite right. shannon's only offers insurance for older people slash clubs etc.

i work for AAMI so i can give you some idea.
i'm insured with Just Car, they're great. I'm 19 from Brisbane and due to age i'd pay more than average also due to it being highly modified.
my first years premium was $1822 (i only pay 1/2 price those cause i work for AAMI XD).
this years dropped down to $1280 which is significant. that's with no claims.
age excesses aren't ridiculous either.

so i definitely recommend JCI cause they're a sister company of AAMI but in saying that, so is Shannons so give them a call and see how you go.

Shannons makes JCI look like a ridiculous joke... Just sayin'.

Do JCI still have the $500 "import excess"? Or the limit of $3,600 payout in case of a total loss if you're on 3rd part fire & theft?

Back when I got my first Silvia (I was 21 I think) they wanted $3,600 a year. For a stockish $11,000 car. Guess where I told them to go.

Basically, your vehicle is insured for a certain value and this is the amount you will received should the insurance company advise that your vehicle is a total loss. (write-off)
In this event, you pay your excess and they'll pay you that amount.
There is no such thing as and 'import excess' to my knowledge but rather an 'age excess' that applies to people 25 and under. The standard excess is $400 and a certain amount will be added to this depending on the age category you fall into.
This is the amount you pay in the event of a claim.

Your premiums are also based on the amount of claims they have in your area, for that car, for your age etc.
And we all know how many young adult fruit loops there are out there who drive silvia's, crash silvia's, write-off silvia's, highly modify silvia's and drift silvia's and lose control.
WOW! There's your extra big premium! *note the sarcasm*

I have never been charged that before, $500 for an import or maybe I have and havent taken any notice.

You sure that they do that on every car???

Not on every car but they do it!
I tried to get a quote for my partners skyline and there was a general excess an age excess (which was different for boys and girls) and a car excess (due to it being an import) THEN........ they wanted pictures of the car because they classed putting a tablespoon of glitter into the clear coat a specialist paint job.

Well it is a specialist paint job. Even though you may think differently.
And this 'import excess' you speak of is the standard excess that applies to everyone.
And as i wrote above the age excess applies on top of this but is different between males and females and age groups under 25.

The reason they need to look further into the paint job is because if they are to insure you and your car is damaged, they are liable to repaint exactly the same as what was there originally. So, in your case, they need to ensure that they're able to find the same paint with the same glitter. Sometimes, in this case, the paint is hard to find or custom which results in higher costs. This then has to be factored in to your annual premium. I once went to get a quote on a car that had a double layer of gold glitter through the paint and JCI refused to insure me because the paint was too expensive/hard to get. Plus on top of all of that, making such a custom colour blend in with the rest of the car is often hard to do.

I understand insurance VERY well.... :)

They refused to insure it due to the paint. It was standard silver and had $50 extra glitter put in the clear coat. It was House of Kolor glitter which is easy to get and match.... The guy was just being a jerk....

I was only getting the quote as i was curious of the company. *They did not rate well with me*

I WORK in insurance AND for a sister company of JCI.

You're, of course, entitled to your opinion but the reasoning for the paint is as per my post above regardless of your $50 extra paint thing. If it was only $50 why bother even mentioning it? If it doesn't make a difference, why mention it?

People are very quick to bad mouth insurance companies because you are buying a 'PROMISE' as such, not something tangible. You're buying into something that you're never quite sure what you are and aren't covered for until you claim, unless you read the PDS. Let me tell everyone, that there are strong reasons behind the PDS and the reasons we do and don't cover certain things. As and overview, MOST insurance companies offer similiar coverage however there certain things that people value over others.
These things include, price, coverage, excess etc. You're generally going to go with the insurer who offers thes best of whichever one above is of more value to you.

Sorry if i came off as rude I certainly did not mean too. My "I understand insurance VERY well" comment was as i worked in insurance for a few years also.

The glitter mearly came up in conversation with the guy and that is why it was mentioned. I was only upset with him due to they did not want to insure it base on something that was worth $50. Not even wanting to discuss it.

Like i said that was my bad 'personal' experience..... I agree with eveything else you are saying in perticular the basis for the PDS....

That's okay.
Unfortunately, personal bad experiences are frequent in the insurance industry.

Sorry to hear.

Maybe cars with glitter paint are more prone to vandalism.
I know shiny things make me want to cut stuff..
