Hey everyone!

my name is Gallant (that's with 2 L's ... no jokes).... and I just bought a Black 1997 Series 1 Auto Legnum :)

I've been on and off here for two years, and always been keen on getting involved a little. I've spent hours going through the forums and loving all the community and information.

I'd always rented/borrowed cars since I lived and worked in the city... and my mates all had utes, vans, 4WD to take us all mountain biking. Last year I needed a car for work and was very tempted to get a Galant/Legnum but was dissuaded by risks of imports, scarcity of parts, poor fuel economy, low 'market value' when it comes to insurance, etc etc... so I ended up with a 5th gen Prelude. Loved it to bits... literally.

So a couple of weeks ago I decided (well forced into) I needed a station wagon, and it had to be black. After owning the Prelude, I realised that unless the largest car you want to drive is a corolla it doesn't mean a hoot, every car drinks. I do 400+km a week so my criteria is as long as I don't have to refuel more than once a week then it's cool... it's such a drag having to look for a pump every third day.

Now, I found ONE black Legnum in Vic... so I bought it.
Had it down at Techsports for a pre-purchase check and Jeff gave it the green light. The guy I bought it off got a roadworthy (he didn't have to do a thing except change a wiper blade that was literally falling off... I had thought they'd make him replace the windscreen which has a couple small chips, or fix up the door seals that were coming off, or replace the rear tint since it has a lot of scratches and slightly peeling - my Prelude had a fair bit of work for the road worthy and it was in better condition).

Mechanically it seems to run smooth, but once things quieten down a little I'll have it in to get some precautionary measures done. The body is in pretty average condition, all the faring guards are loose and/or scratched, both front and rear bumpers have signs of light collision (cracks and dents), has been keyed quite badly (but has been touched up) on multiple panels and bonnet, rear tint is damaged, interior requires a very thorough clean, window wind down/up lock isn't working, it's sporting an aftermarket steel exhaust with dual square tips, pictures to come, but it sits too low and looks odd, but I prefer it over big milo tins more for work reasons... on the plus side only the driver's leather seat is showing some cracking, the BBS factory rims are in near mint condition, the moonroof is tinted (I read somewhere in these forums that it's not a good thing?), car handles great, factory calipers have been painted red (ok, some of you may say this is a bad thing, but i kinda like it), and everything else is stock.

A lot of wires have been cut - the brake light on the rear window works, but all the others have been cut... also a couple cables under the steering column have been cut. One could be the speed sensor, might put a switch on it.

Do I need a turbo timer? thinking about getting one, but it's survived 14 years without one?

Anyway... loving the AWD and AYC :) also being able to get work gear in and out without having to clamber over front seats.

I have way too much work at the moment, but once things get quiet I'll take it out for a photoshoot. So for now, here's a quick pic off the iPhone.

Sorry about the rant, and HI!

mmm love the black. our turbos are to small to worry about a timer, but you money into some thing more useful.
The cables that have been cut under the steering column could of be an imobilizer. but would have to see what they are,
any way welcome you should be able to find every thing you need on here, however the search function is a little hard to get use to.

Hi,
now that's a introduction.
As far as the turbo timer I've got one and turn it off most the time, I think somewhere there's a thread or has been talked about and most said it's not needed can't remember if they are just oil or oil and water cooled. I'm sure someone will give you a better answer.
Cheers Mel

Our laughably small TD03s are water cooled which some say negates the need for a turbo timer. I have one and turn it off most of the time as I generally don't give my car a hard time and then turn it off immediately. The best turbo timer is common sense. Use the last couple km before you reach your destination driving sensibly (no long periods of high load) allowing the turbo temp to stabilise and you'll be fine. I could no doubt rant on about the pros and cons but there's an entire thread about this somewhere.

Ps Welcome :D

Welcome mate. NICE intro. It's always nice to see someone who can get it right the first time :)

Nice ride too. The black, the OEM BBS rims and the red calipers is a great looking combo (Assuming your going for that OEM look!)

Welcome buddy you should come down to the wash meet tomorrow so you can meet and have a chat with some of us.

Welcome buddy, ur ride looks great n there is nothing wrong with personallising ur ride as then its easier to tell out of a pack of leggies...... enjoy ur new ride

Cheers Jeff

thanks guys... I didn't know they were watercooled, well I guess no need for a turbo timer haha.

I took some pictures of the cut cable, it's on the iPhone still. I'm sure I saw a schematic for the wiring in the thread about disabling the speed sensor... I'll check it out when I'm home.

@Rob: yeah I plan to come down, just I don't anticipate to be finished until 7pm... being self-employed means clients think you don't have closing hours. But I guess I can be on this forum while working haha. I'll drop by afterwards, might still catch you there.

Welcome mate! Nice write-up. Car's body doesn't look too shabby in the pics either :)

What business are you in?

welcome Gallant. do you have overfenders?

i feel the template isnt needed in this case

Tom: The picture's very deceptive. The car was still dirty so all the scratches, swirls, dents etc dont' show up. I just washed it last night and it's a lot worse than I had anticipated. The car needs a lot of detailing. All the fender flares are falling off, front and rear bumpers have more damage than I had thought, there is a massive crack (and bits fallen off on the front right hand side underneath the car in front of the front wheel) where the front bumper should be attached.

I think it'll be a relatively easy but rewarding project to rejuvenate it. It's super busy at the moment. I'm a commercial photographer, but I still do weddings by referral... and it's wedding season so I'm short on time. Loving it, but looking forwards to when I get time to do some work on the car.

Hi Paul, yeah I have overfenders (very slight) at the front... and none at the back. But I have fender flares which need some TLC.

I hear ur pain Gallant, im also self employed n its hard to say no to customers
