Well it isn't good for the car...

If you only hold it for a few seconds and don't do it all the time you shouldn't have any problems so long as you driveline is ok to begin with.

I have done it maybe 10 times and had no probs...

By launching an auto, I presume you mean stalling it?
Stalling the auto will generate extra heat. Extra heat is not a great thing so its advisable to have an aftermarket trans cooler if you want to stall it regularly. That being said, if you stall it at a set of lights, then drive for a good few minutes to ensure the trans fluid pumpss around the stock cooler before trying again.

In other words, don't stall it up every set of lights down the highway every 30sec to a Minute. This will definately lead to an early death of your transmission. BUT you can do it every now and then without any worry.

Factory stall is around 2500rpm ;)

So,
Stand on the breaks and rev the engine to as high as your balls can handle and release the breaks.

This is how you launch an auto. Someone might advise you not to Rev it above Xrpm for a launch?

In manuals if we launch to many times above 3k rpm our clutch will die very quickly.

Not your balls your brakes. Slowly build the revs to just before the point where the brakes wont hold the car then release the brakes.

I know my balls will handle the rev's higher than the brakes will:wanker:

The extra load is absorbed through your torque converter. I launched mine plenty of times and my TC was fine. Like Lee said, its the heat thats the problem. Trans cooler is a must

I used to stand on the brakes, let the car settle, then get the revs up to around 3k, waiting for the back of the car to lift as it loads up correctly, holding it for the tree, then release the brakes on a certian green light... :D

I found that 2500 didnt get the car off the line fasten enough....

As the guys say this will heat the oil up and could cause issues futher down the line if not cooled enough afterwards, or serviced...
