'Sup everyone, long time lurker (damn didn't realise I registered here in 2011!), first time poster.

Name's James, from Victoria; and I'm here to seek your knowledge! :)

I'm eyeing off a really nice Legnum and considering buying it, they're just so damn attractive! Been lurking and searching the forums for a bit and I'm nearly ready to commit, but I have one sorta large hurdle...

VicRoads.

I really want to get this car, but I'm on my green Ps in Victoria. Now because the Legnum is twin turbo; and I'm on my Ps, that must mean I'll wildly swerve the car off the road and in to a tree and spontaneously combust and murder all the endangered wildlife in the area... Well that's what VicRoads seems to think.

Jokes aside, I think I may be in luck. VicRoads permits turbocharged cars up to 125kw/tonne if it's a "family car" and I must apply for an exemption. But as far as I know, the Legnum is about 135kw/tonne? Does anyone know how much power the car would lose over time and the possibility that if I can prove it's lost it's original horses, VicRoads would approve it? This of course, largely means committing and buying it anyway, then risking the possibility of being screwed. Worst case scenario I just leave it in my garage and drive it occasionally "to the shops" for the next year until I'm off my Ps.

I'm not intending to race the car or be any sort of idiot with it. I'm just in the market for a new car, REALLY like the Legnums, and know they're an amazingly built car; oh and AWD is a MUST.

I like to think I can talk my way in to an exemption from VicRoads, but... Obviously I'm here to ask for everyone's opinion on the matter.

So please, share your thoughts!

Hmm... dunno about how it's viewed in Victoria, but the "official" weight of a legnum is 1550kg here. Perhaps if you buy a PFL auto and show them proof that it came out with 260hp (193.8kw), then that might get you through? That should work out to pretty much exactly 125kw/tonne if my maths is correct.

Its easy, just make your car heavier then standard.. tell them you have to put a toolbox permanently in the boot which has about 200kgs worth of tools for work. also that you need to install a tow bar, which is almost 50kgs with brackets and stuff. and to top it all off gain heaps of weight...

get some insurance quotes on your P's with a legnum

that will change your mind, if you can even insure it

Cheers guys!

BFun, it's a 2001 VR-4 Type S... So... Not pre-facelift unfortunately.

Roy, not sure how well that's gonna work, but maybe! I swear Mr. VicRoads, I will always have that block of lead in the boot.

That was the next hurdle. Lol - I already get raped by insurance, a bit more wont hurt, used to it by now. Haha.

That is: not sure how many insurers will actually insure a Legnum. Need to talk to my mate at AAMI.

And again, I could always drive it uninsured (bleh) in small amounts (very small, slow, paranoid, amounts) until off my Ps... But that's not really the best solution.

I wouldn't bother with AAMI. Just go straight to Just Car. They have it listed and you can adjust your premium so that you have a massive excess instead of a massive premium. So it only sucks should anything go wrong.

We don't have NRMA in SA, so I can only go by experience. I think its SGIC over here.

Don't even consider that. People that do this make me just as angry as drunk drivers and should be handed hefty fines. In my opinion at least 3rd party property should be compulsory. Driving on the roads is a privilege, not a right. Others peoples lives, families and property are at risk, so be responsible or don't drive. Very simple.

Sounds like the better option here would be to buy a cheap car to get you off your Ps and then get the Legnum once it's actually legal for you to do so?

Yeah, and if you don't have insurance, you almost definitely will have an accident as soon as you roll out of your driveway. That's Murphy's law for you.

I second what Peter says, get a cheap car first, you'll be able to save more in the long term. There are a few cheap cars you can buy that might not be powerful, but are fun to drive. If you aren't mechanically minded, learn what you can before jumping to a VR4 - the VR4 isn't exactly an easy car to work on. I wish I was taught to work on cars before I got my Legnum. Life would be easier :P

getting an exemption relies on:

1) the car actually having less than 125kw/1000kg, while chances are it wont be higher in reality (lost power over time etc) it may be higher depending on the actual car you buy and how well it has fared/any mods done.

2)that Vicroads will accept the actual kw/ton rather than the manufacturers specification(in my experience the manufacturers specifications are used for almost everything and they wont care that it has less power in reality).

3) that Vicroads will actually give you an exemption even if the above are met.

I believe they don't grant these exemptions in all cases, especially if the family has more than one car and other cars that would be more suitable for a P plater to drive. The exemption is there to help people where it is impractical for them to drive anything other than a turbo car (say the family only has one car and its turbo, its unreasonable to expect the family to buy another car for the P-plater, and so this exemption is there), the exemption isn't meant to let p-platers drive turbo cars with lower power-weight if they have alternatives, if that was the case they would have defined a power/weight limit in the legislation.

I was driving on my p's with the gallant. I would suggest against it even though I was never pulled over. I am insured with just cars they have me down as the preliminary driver.

I had one as well on my P's and insurance wasn't through the roof like everyone seems to think it is. Don't get caught driving it because you will never get an exemption for the thing. I would suggest to hold out buying a new car until you can legally drive it.

I rang Vic roads for my Mrs on her green Ps to see if she could drive my car taking it in turns up to dubbo then blue mountains earlier this year

The guy said don't waste your time. So I did all the driving.

It's hard work getting exceptional circumstances for a vehicle. Especially a grey import when there are so many legal alternatives (that are boring)

Righto, time to cease this discussion please and familiarise yourself with the forum rules, particularly this one:

Rule 4: Illegal activities are not tolerated.
OzVR4 encourages safe driving and will not tolerate any discussion of illegal or irresponsible activities on the roads. This includes uploading any photos or videos of such actions. If you are looking for street drags and burnouts etc then there are plenty of other car forums that will be happy to have you as a member.
