G'Day Everyone,

Being a time-poor kind of individual, there are moments where one needs to recognise the skills of others and handball these jobs on to those who are knowledgable. Do I do my own plumbing? Well, no unless you count my water-cooled PC.

So, I dropped off a quick email to Chadstone Mitsubishi (Melbourne) to see what servicing a Legnum would be like. The response I got this morning was promising.

Mitsubishi Chadstone said:
Hi Gavin,

We dont have any service information or cost for your vehicle (VR-4 Legnum). However we can provide a service schedule book for an Australian version of a similar type of vehicle.

The 60,000km service cost will be $238.00. Service intervals are every 15,000km and for turbo charged vehicles, engine oil should be changed every 5,000km.

Automatic transmission flush with SP-3 fluid will cost $185.00.

To flush out AYC and ACD fluid will cost $148.50 plus cost of oil (oil flush on similar vehicles takes approx 2.5L to 3.0L of SP-3 Fluid). However fluid flush for AYC and ACD system is only practical if our MUT-3 can communicate to your vehicle's computer system.

Flushing of AYC and ACD can also be carried out by directly powering up AYC pump and bleeding the system. This method is not recommended but may be the only choice if computers don't communicate. This may also incur extra labour charge.

So there you have it. Some ballpark figures and the like for everyone's enjoyment. With the timing belt service looming, sometimes it'll be good to go to someone who can readily get the parts. It'd be funnier still if I quoted part numbers straight from their CAPS database. Of course, I think Loki will get the service every 10,000km (recommended servicing schedule as per the manual?). I've booked in for the 13th November so it gives them plenty of time to look it up and bring stuff in. It'd be nice to have a few service centres sprinkled around the cities to give people a chance to drop it in where it's most convenient as well.

That being said, there's a certain "NatRad" in South Melbourne who's had this car for a total of three days getting bits and pieces sorted out!

A loan car can be provided for $44.00 from Mitsi to cover fuel and insurance. I wonder if they'll let me take an EVO-X out for a spin? :D

ACD = Active Centre Differential

From the Mitsubishi website:

Active Centre Differential

The Active Centre Differential, first introduced in the Evo VII, is an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch which distributes torque between the front and rear to improve traction under acceleration out of a corner. It works in conjunction with Active Yaw Control which enhances grip and steering response whilst driving through the bend itself. Using sensors, ACD regulates slippage in the 50:50 torque-split diff from free to lock-up according to speed and load. So under hard acceleration the ACD moves towards lock-up to put more torque down on the road for stronger traction, but with rapid steering inputs it operates virtually like an open differential to improve steering feel and response.

A choice of three setting - tarmac, gravel and snow - operated manually, gradually lock up the Active Centre Differential depending on road conditions.

Haha I'd like to see that, Kris ;)

Seriously I'm not particularly surprised, though, and I've been thinking its kinda strange people keep talking about taking their cars there - the guys that work in Mitsi dealerships in Australia aren't likely to have much experience with performance cars, as Mitsuibishi haven't really officially RELEASED most of their performance cars over here. I've heard enough horror stories from friends with perfomance cars going to SPECIALISTS who screw things up, let alone taking them along to some cowboy working at a dealership. I've KNOWN some of those cowboys and I'd never even let them near a car I DIDN'T like!

Not that everyone at dealer workshops are useless, of course. I dunno, I just think that no one will take as much care with my car as I will. But then, I guess I don't really trust ANYONE very far with things I care about ;)

Had my car booked into Mitsubishi Motors at Wayville here in SA for an AYC service.

They could not get the MUT-2 or MUT-3 computer systems to communicate with the car, and subsequently, the service was not carried out. They said they may be able to do it manually, but there is a very high possibility of getting air in the system and it will become noisy, which it already is.

Does anyone know WHO can service these things, and WHERE, in SA of course.

Maybe an EVO5 two-way mechanical LSD is an easier option.... :p

Was a Ralliart Colt, was a 1997 Toyota Aristo was a 1996 Legnum..Now an XR5 Turbo
None of the Mitsi dealers can communicate with our system so don't even both....I can get more out of the local Goodyear as they have a universal reader BUT I would recommend that you got to someone that specialises in EVO cars and don't really trust anyone else..

Why is it that a specialised Mitsubishi reader can't communicate with a specialised Mitsubishi product? Isn't our AYC the same as EVO 5-7?

Sounds stupid to me.

S&J are the next street over from me, might ask them tomorrow. If I can't get anything out of them, I'll jump on MGEC or EvolutionOz.

I also am getting Mitsi Motors Wayville to price up everything I need for a timing belt change. Will wait to hear back from them.

S&J can't do it either.

I have a number for a guy by the name of Steve Knight, he is a bit of a guru from what I have been told, just need to call him and find out...

Funny, my Mitsi Dealer can ... He also knew alot about the right trans oils and AYC fluids ...
Anyone wanting to go to a mitsi dealer in Perth WA, go to Paceway Mitsubishi in Osborne Park and speak to Anthony Paynter (think thats the right spelling).
He's a champ !

I don't see why not? We have a RAWS approved device that we use for all Nissan and Toyota. I hooked this up to my car today and it actually gave more info on the VR-4 than it does on these other makes
