it works on ntsc,

it will not work, on our PAL standard.

Okay, Thanks, so there is no way to convert our pal o ntsc then?
Cheers

Yes with an expensive convertor ... not worth it.
Best thing is to get something that has a video out and outputs to NTSC. I bought a Zen Vision M, its a 60GB player that plays divX. Hook that up to the AV channel via the video input on the tunner box in the boot. Then u can watch wat ever u like ;)

u just need pal tv tuner that outputs to ntsc ... but they are kinda pricey. I think ur better off with something that play divX , avi or wmv ... TV is crap these days anyway.

if you have one then its NOT that easy. I have one here for a customer currently and I see an entirely different matter at hand. yes I'm reworking it and no I cannot really share due to an agreement I have.

I will say its not straight video to the main screen.

U can run both tuners inline using the Jap Tuner's AV channel.
U just need a remote to change the channel. U can't hook up to the touch screen from what I gather so it can be very simple ...

yep I use that method on the skylines I do when I need a simple job.

looking at this one its a bit different, I did see the AV IN/OUT there but I'm looking at the tuner internals for a way to fiddle with it. what I'm upto is to press the TV button without having to hit the AVin on the screen. both cars I have are fitted with the dealer TV unit.

I have the info already on it and a MMCS car in the shop now so I'll fiddle more later.

kristian,

you can watch porno's onthem anyway. I though thats waht the fold down seats in those things were for anyway..

Stuff the free to air tv get a mediagate they cost around $350 plus a sata hard drive and you can then watch anything you want and they come with wireless network capability's anyway. So you can have the car in the shed and upload to the hdd with only the power being on. They run on 12-13v as well.

I actually run a lot cheaper method, i have a 60GB MP4 player that outputs ntsc. That way I can take my stereo with me ... best option in my opinion.
You don't have to press the AV channel if u leave it on the AV channel. U just hit TV and away u go ... Its mega simple. I have cable running all the way to the rear, so my Creative Vision M sits in the centre console right next to me. Then just torrent some music videos and your laughing. Better than some expensive setup and when I park the car there is nothing to see as its in my pocket ;)

I have used that method on the skylines as well in place of a DVD unit.
looks like its out with the O'scope to map out a few things.

( I have the pinouts of this unit but want to play a bit.)

You don't have to hit the AV button on the touch screen every time. When in TV mode and you select AV on the touch screen it will stay in AV unless you tell it to go back to the factory tuner. So there is no issue of having to press they AV button every time to be able to view when in tv mode.

If your looking at changing some internal circuitry to get the factory tuner working i wouldn't bother wasting your time. I have looked into it and being a Mechatronics Engineer who designs this sort of stuff, i can tell you that unfortunately with the IC's they have used it is not just a matter of changing a crystal to decode pal instead of ntsc, and the decoding IC they have used doesn't have an equivalent PAL version that you can replace it with.

The Mediagate as tommo suggested is a good idea but $350 is hugely expensive. I have a HDD media player in my car running through my factory tuner, cost $90 of ebay, plus another $70-$80 for a 320GB HDD. They are great, you can watch whatever movies, videos, etc you put on them as well as all your mp3s.

I do believe I found the PAL equivilent IC for it. its more the tuner that conscerns me. yes I'm wasting $$ but for my sake I wish to crack this without resorting to a new box,

I can do various AV in ideas on it as well . thats not what I'm trying to do.

I kept the IC datasheets and I have a spare tuner here to muck with.

like you I have a design/electronics background.

did you look inside the navi unit?

If you did find the equivalent PAL IC then that would be very interesting, i searched hi and low for it and cam up with nothing. This statement puzzels me though :
its more the tuner that conscerns me
From my memory, and it was a long while ago i looked into this, but the NTSC decoder IC should be all that you need to change within the tuner to get it to work. If you have found the exact PAL counterpart for the original NTSC IC, you should only have to change this part of the tuner to have it work with Australian PAL encoded TV signals (of course there are the accompanying crystals and other external components that will need to be modified to). So i don't know what else about the tuner you are refering to that concerns you?

If your talking about tuning in the correct TV channel frequency then there is nothing to change, as all the 'tuner' part of the TV tuner does is tune in the selected frequency, the decoder IC's do the rest and are the part that doesn't allow the tuner to work here in Australia. So tuning in 209.25MHz (Channel 10 video carrier here in Sydney), is no different to tuning in 209.25MHz in Japan which may be station 'XYZ', its just the decoding that is different.

I havn't looked inside the navi unit, touch screen display or radio unit yet, although i do have a complete set in my garage to play with. The only thing i looked at was the tuner, and i took pictures of all IC's in it so i could try and work out the circuit and what needed to be replaced.
