1998 Mitsubishi Galant vr4
Hey everyone,
I just picked up a 1998 Mitsubishi Galant vr4 currently at 60 000 kms (supposedly)
Project car and hoping to fix up and be proud of
Silver, Ayc, Manual, Stock
Had it checked out by my local mechanic who noticed minor gear box leak, some worn bushes, a rusted exhaust muffler (please recommend whole new maximum performance exhaust system, peoples thoughts on X force vortex systems which can alter sound and volume?), worn engine mounts (already sourced), and worn lower control arms ($600? Time till full failure?).

Noticed dirty oil so I'm wanting to change (please recommend best oil possible and opinions around engine flush? )

Also would love to find production number?
What variant I have?
Common problems and issues?
What I should also do as new owner? Eg radiator flush?
Actual kms of car?

Thanks :)

Welcome aboard. Japanese Odometer Check definitely need to be engaged on this one. Under 4000km a year for the past 16 years!? Hmm. Does your AYC prime and work? Either way, take it to a specialist mechanic that knows the model and get them to swap all fluids and check everything.

Replace your LCAs yesterday. Don't drive with play in the straight LCAs, otherwise bad things may happen.

Pretty sure your chassis number on your firewall serves as your production number.

This legnum and galant modifying scene has been going on for quite a while now and you'll find everything has been well discussed so search and read up and you'll find most of your questions have been answered.

Welcome to OZVR4! I agree with Volk and recommend you confirm the mileage on the car and replace your lower control arms as soon as possible. I don't see why you shouldn't go with a 30 weight oil -- that is what Mitsubishi recommends as the oil grade for our cars i.e. 5w30 full synthetic. 0w30 should be even better. Nice find though -- good that it's a manual, otherwise you'd have to look at strengthening the auto transmission as well.

Welcome nick.

I had a look at his car yesterday and a few things don't add up for such a low k car. Engine mounts are all shot to pieces, lower control arm bushes split. Lower rad support has been pushed back in an acco. Big coolant explosion in the engine bay stains over everything. It's been dodged up. Gbox mount had the bolt hanging out. Gear linkages have random washers and crap holding them together. There is a lot of work to get this poor gurl back to the glory days. Sorry nick not bagging out just giving people an idea of what needs to be done.

I'm only 10mins down the road champ for anything u need assistance with. But I said yesterday TME Steve is vr4 god!

Welcome nick.

I am in Penrith area as well, a fair few from western Sydney too.
in regards to exhaust, you have a couple of options. Shop wise, few of us, including myself had our exhaust done by Windsor exhaust. Then you have Adam's dad that made a few set for some member( I think)

Mechanical service contact TME Steve.
and you met trotty, he is dismantling a wreck so might be useful.

Plenty of useful info here and we are like a huge family so just ask.
