Need help - clutch changeover.

I bought the Exedy Sports organic clutch and since we've got the clutch in it seems that when we depress the clutch its hitting the cover?!?!?!?!?

Idea's? I was told this clutch should bolt straight up?!

In the end a fella from a reputable clutch company (he machined my flywheel and was concerned with the clutch cover from the beginning) came up to verify that the clutch cover is roughly 2-3mm to big hence the cover touching the bell housing. We're going to leave the clutch in for a bit to see if it will shave enough away from the bell housing. Other than that the clutch is fine, but he said that particular clutch is technically not the right one to use for our cars.

that part number is:

Single Sports Range
Exedy "Sports Single" Sports Organic - MBK-7349SO/MBK-7420SO

that one is meant to fit perfectly, im intrigued

Yep MBK-7420S0 is the one that was used. They verified today that the clutch cover is 3.5mm higher than the existing one. When we took off the rubber plug to see the cover you could see just how close the cover was to the bell housing. Not all of the cover touches the bell housing, only other slightly raised parts.

The clutch is a bit shuddery if you let it slip too much but it is also still bedding. There's definitely plenty of bite and the pedal is quite heavy, but I like that feeling. Its just taking a bit to adjust to driving. And yes its not the greatest in peak hour traffic.

If the mods would like to delete this thread and add posts to the clutch thread maybe?

so long as it actually fits i dont mind if its close.
At least steve will know it for next time

Its close you could put a file in between to try and shave down some metal to make some clearance.

I did say to him "be prepared, after mine there will be more coming in". hahahaha

But yeah he's not a complete fan of exedy clutches in evo's or VR4's.

What is he a fan of? And does the product he would rather put in make anything for our cars?

Extreme clutches and sticking with the Magna clutches instead of going EVO as the clamping pressures are so much higher than that of the Magna/VR4 clutches. He's heard/had horror stories about the clamping pressures creating drama's later down the track.

However, he may be impartial to extreme clutches as he gets all his parts from them. Then again he does race EVO's.

Its been proven that stock pressure on the clutch means they have a life of about 5 minutes lol.... We need something with a higher pressure plate to take the abuse we'd throw at them!

(Yes, you dump it, I know you do :))

Who is this workshop you went to? I'll need a new clutch at some stage.

I've never been a fan of extreme, would prefer an EXEDY. Good info, Macca.

Thats interesting cos i just put one of these in last week and have had problems with it also. Mine shudders going down gears although that is getting slightly better and i can hear a kind of knocking/tapping noise when the pedal is depressed. Which i seem to remember Stephen said his had too when it first went in.

Joel - I had Steve Knight get the clutch in. He's up at Lonsdale, he's a champ but as it's only him in the workshop it does take him a while to get through his log of jobs. I think he was pretty damn honest, very helpful, and quite cheap. He even had a quick look at some other things that I had mentioned and he even flashed my ecu (timing, boost, boost cut, speed limiter (510km HAHAH) etc etc) at no extra charge, he just wanted to do them!

Matt - yep sounds exactly the same as mine but not quite as much contact. Down shifting I find easier than gear up. Taking off in first gear I hate hearing the clutch grind (as it hasn't bedded yet), I know its nothing but its not a nice sound. hahah The knocking noise is slowly going away and we've taken off the rubber plug and the cover on the other side to allow the shavings to drop out.

But I'm hesitant to let others drive my car now. Its definitely a totally different style of driving and drivers that are used to letting their clutch slip in will struggle with this.

As Matt said I had the same one installed as well. Mines done about 4000kms now and it still has the clutch grind when releasing first gear and still shudders when the revs aren't matched on downshifts. Although, these symptoms are all explained in the manual/sheet that comes with the clutch, so it's pretty much acting as specified. Also the knocking noise you described went away in less than 500kms with me.

I completely agree when you say it's a completely different car to drive, and yes peak hour traffic sucks. Time to build those leg muscles :)

PS. Great news on the ecu flash, notice much of a difference?

I have spoken to Steve on a couple of occasions, he was the one who found out my ECU was flashable. I asked him to check a fault that kept occuring, he found no fault but changed my boost cut and speed limiter :P

I'll be getting him to do the 100k service on the new car, and reflash when the time comes.

I'll be getting Steve to do most of my work from now on I think, including 100,000km service etc.

Nice to know there is some resolution to it all.

As for the ECU flash, its hard to tell because I've had to nanna the car for so long because of the clutch slipping in every gear, it just feels like a monster again! (y) But it does feel like it spools up really quick now.

Steve does seem very geniune. He replaced the input shaft bearing in my gearbox when I did my clutch, and should be giving mine a tune by the end of January when I get home, and install my fmic.

When I pulled my evo 8 clutch out to change the friction plate (five puck carbonetic to organic), i also noted a very slight amount of rubbing evident. I think mine started out as an excedy clutch, but jim berry had modified it.

Now with the organic plate, it still bites well, but so much nicer to drive in traffic as my daily.

Guys if you go back through some of the older threads other members have had problems with the Exedy button & cushioned button clutches, to the point where they've completely failed after a short period of time. Hopefully yours' will last, but for others looking at this as an upgrade path either stick to the Exedy HD kit or get a non-Exedy performance clutch kit for an Evo (see Carsten's ride thread for inspiration).
