Hey Everyone.

I just signed up as it turns out I am on the Legnum hunt. Unfortunatly it wont be my car, will be my girlfriends. Ill have to keep making do with my Twin Turbo JZZ30 Soarer.

Weve been planning on replacing her Suzuki Vitara with a station wagon of some sorts for a while and since shes hats Falcons and Commodores the 3 Japanese Wagons were the obvious options.

Straight away we ruled out the Caldina becuase they all ugly as balls. So it was down to the stagea and the legnum. Ive always prefered the Legnum looks wise but had settled on a stagea as im much more familiar with RB motors, and the legnum engine pay seems very cramped.

However as our loan was approved today were were looking around then net and she has fallen in love with the legnum, one in particular that im hoping we can snap up from Japan.

Our budget is only around 13 thousand which seems a little to low to buy locally so its looks like we will be going down the imporing path which should be good fun.

Just thought id introduce myself and ask if anyone has any advice on potential issues and porblems to look out for, both with the Legnum itself and with the importing process. At this point im looking at going with the Chef, or J-Spec if they ever come back online.

Well this is starting to look like an essay.

I look forward to getting to know some of you, looks like you have a good community going on here.

Cheers,
Luke.

Welcome! And all the best with the importing :)

So are you going for a Manual or Auto, and Series 1 or Series 2? :D

Welcome to the club Luke.

$13k will easily get you a very nice Legnum via importing. You have the stronger Aussie dollar and the GFC to thank for this.

This thread lists some common problems with these cars:

http://www.ozvr4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6799

In summary, they are generally reliable cars with the only big ticket (and big dollar!) question mark over the auto transmissions and potentially the AYC units when they let go.

Trevor (SiliconAngel) has written up an excellent guide to the importing process. You can read that guide here:

Some other clown wrote a follow up guide to getting the car on the road, here:

Good luck with your search!

Oh and regarding the Chef, best just to give him a call on his mobile - 0402 904 069.

Cheers mate. Were not to fussed whether its auto or manual. Although all the ones weve been keen on so far have been tiptronic.

Is there much of a difference between s1 and s2, what year did they change?

Yeah there seems to be alot of options for 13k in Japan, where as here there are hardly any.

Cheers for the links, id already found the importing ones, but the common problems one is very handy. Cheers

As soon as the money is actually in our account ill be getting right onto that :)

They changed in August 1998.

One easy way to tell the difference is that S2 has twin fog lights whereas S1 has single fog lights.

A lot of the changes were cosmetic (S2 had extra foglights, wider wheels, trim upgrade, bonnet, tailgate (in the Legnum) and bodykit changes etc).

The major mechanical change is that the S2 autos now made the full 206kW and 367nM. The S1 autos only made 191kW and 343nM. All manuals made the full power and torque figures.

Note that there was also a mini-update in May 2000, mostly in relation to interior trim and the high viz dash.

oh ok, cool.

The couple weve got our eye on are 1999 so they would be Series2.

Cheers.

Yup 1999 would definitely be the Series 2! :D

I told here about there being a ladies club, she seemed quite excited. Are there many women around here?

Welcome to the club. Keep us updated with the progress of your journey :)

Cheers, will definatly keep everyone posted. Hopefully it all goes smoothly....

No worries man, send me a PM if you want to talk further about it :)

G'Day Luke, welcome aboard,

When I read your post, it's eerily similar to what my lass drives (Suzuki Vitara). As much as she loves driving Loki, she also knows that another Legnum would be unsuitable for her needs (going through paddocks investigating land owners' properties, etc in the Yarra Valley Region).

well we signed all the paperwork today.

Although it now has to be sent up to head office for a final check over, so that means we wont have the money probably till the middle of the week. Was hoping to get the ball rolling over the weekend. Oh well, few more days wont hurt I guess.

ok guys, I have a question.

Ive become quite fond of the Trigger Mauve colour, and was quite taken by pu-11-me's Black leather interior. So im wondering if the black leather came out in the Trigger Mauve series 2's?

I dont want to limit my options too much but if that is a fairly common combination I shall work on tracking one down.

I cant wait till next week when I actually have the money in my account so I can get onto Iron Chef and seriously start the hunt.

Black leather interior was only ever available on a special edition white auto prefacelift.

welcome,

about the black leather interior, might be easier if you get the interior re-trimmed at local car upholstery workshops..

My car is a mix and matched combo, just a collaboration of all the best VR4 bits haha.... One of only 2 known cars in Oz with black leather from a "Car Of The Year" and a manual gearbox :)

If you wanted black leather, just do what Chris said and get a local upholstry place to retrim for you. I've heard they are pretty damn expensive to buy the genuine ones ;)
