well my cars making bad sounds AGAIN!!! it only been 3 months since the gearbox bearing!

now the sound is similar to a stuffed CV, clunk clunk clunk....

its always there while the wheels are turning....
louder under load (accelerating), and speeds up when the car speeds up,

if i depress the clutch the noise is still there, just not loud,

ive had the car off the ground, and running in second gear, and i can hear it,
i believe its comming from the rear end,

the AYC light has not come on to indicate a fault,
and appears to function normally...

i have put my hand on the rear diff housing and i can feel a bit of a clunk,
but this could be being transfered thru the driveline???

i have quickly checked cv's and they appear fine (the outer ones at least)

any guess's as to what it is??

Definately not a CV if you've had the car up off the ground running and you can still hear it.

Could possibly be diff related, or even something as simple as crap caught in the drive shaft boot and knocking against something.

Any chance of maybe taking a video of it so we can hear it?

Tailshaft.

Sounds like a centre bearing death of sorts. My skyline shaft is dying now, brutal slapping/clunking noise under load.

hoping what ever it is its simple.

having a mate whos a mechanic come round in the weekend to have a look.

one person has guessed it's a damaged/broken crown wheel in one of the diffs :(

what ever it is... i cant really afford it right now! but it will have to be done....
bit sick of the car atm! it seams to spend more time being fixed/modded then driven!! :(

feel what pain? my cars still been on the road longer % of time than yours has.

dont even think mike whos doing a single turbo conversion will be off road as long as yours.

yeah true :) tbh I haven't driven mine enough to actually break something, it's only done 2500km or so since May 07 when I got it back, and be extrapolation, about 3000km since Jan 06. Ahh well, when it is running it is bloody fast as you can attest to. Do you know that to this day you're the only person that has driven my VR-4 apart from my mum? And I wasn't even in the car!

I was chasing you in your car :)

...a few days short of 7 months and counting:ROFLMAO: Im pretty sure it couldv been done in 1 though if you didnt stuff around and whatnot.. and didnt have to figure it out/make **** up as you go.

Hopefully your issues arent too bad this time round.. I guess that means you are getting some good power to the ground though? Do you think your 18"s might be putting some extra stress through the driveline/ayc?

lol. true,... yes its fast and loud :P

i think ive done 15000km at least in mine in the last year, and its been off road for at least a month of that time.

did you ever get the S-AYC in or did you sell it??

i wouldnt think the 18's would be stressing it to much,
the ST handled them fine, and i didnt drive that nicely either

I did 18000km in mine from the start of May 05 through to January 06, but I was driving all over auckland. Doesn't beat what I did in the company car, that was like 19000km in 4 months.

Just got normal AYC atm, Gary is trying to find a cheap SAYC for me. But I got no money atm, silly V12 :)

I just thought of something, that guy who is a friend of Defexion's (remy or something on cvr4) has a driveshaft and all the mounts from his car, I also beleive he still has the xfer case and rear diff, you could probably get those parts from his car depending on what it is.

What time is Dave coming out to see you? At your place or your parents place? I might try and make it out.

not sure, he's gonna txt on the day,

its at my gf's place. yeh might get in contact with remy.

once i know whats broken.

ummm yeah! 3 teeth broken,
no other damage. found all the bits and they havent damaged anything else!

can anyone name this part/gear for me.... it's the cog that sits at the end of the driveshaft....

Frustratingly Mitsubishi seem to have retained the policy they started with the GTO's of supplying only complete gear assemblies, not individual components. I've been through CAPS from one end to another and there's no way of finding any internal differential components.

My suggestion would be to undo that bolt, pop the cog out and take it to a machine shop and have them make one up - it'll probably end up a hell of a lot cheaper than the Mitsi part anyway, and you can get it made to a much higher grade while you're at it

Holy crapoly!! There must have been a fair bit of torque for those chunky teeth to have been snapped!!

What Trevor said... get one made up at a diff machining shop; they're experts in high grade machining.:)

got another one from another broken diff (failed spider? in that one)
has similar kms of use to mine,

it came from a prefacelift auto,
all 8g vr4s with ayc share the same rear diff & transfercase

so for those doing manual conversions,
all you need is the gearbox, all the auto driveline parts are the same/compatible

While we are on the diff topic, do the non ayc diffs use the same gears as the ayc ones or is nothing interchangeable?

Crown gear with helical teeth... damn that's a LOT of force required to do that type of damage to shear it like it's done in the photos.

the non ayc diffs should work aswell, they should be the same ratio,
but i havent seen one so cant confirm.... dunno if they are all open diffs or LSD think it was an option???
