Over Heating

Hi Guys/Gals

I recently bought a 1997 VR4 Galant, I have noticed that the engine bay gets really hot pretty quick especially the front drivers side towards the pipping. I know being twin turbo this may have an affect on that.

Does anyone else experience this the temp gauge is normal and no warning lights come on.

Any thoughts would help

Thanks
Jay

they do warm up very quick but its nothing to worry about. if you take the car on the track or do some very hard driving watch the temp as it does tend to over heat

What Joe said.....

Mine gets to normal operating temp within about 2 minutes of slow driving (Under 3000rpm :))

Twin turbos.Go figure!

Most of us pop the bonnet to let some of the heat out. the max I've seen the water temp get to is 100c.
So far.

i got alot of cooling in my car - water temp has never gone past ~80c on the guage, and 82 on my VFC :) i have it set to kick in the extra fan at 80 though so go figure.

oil temp is never more than around 70 - 75 either, generally sits closer to 60 unless i thrash the hell out of it, at which it may get to 70..

as for heat though, pop up the bonnet and jeez its hot.... aftermarket bonnet would be nice.

Just check your overflow bottle every so often. Occasionally this can drop due to evaporation if you get a series of hot days. I know I need to check mine vigilantly as most days now are around 35-37 in Darwin.

Thanks Guys for your reply, perhaps a bigger radiator or intercooler might make some difference, these are excellent cars but the engine does seem noisy or is it just mine?

Does AYC make allot of difference because I've never seen mine light up?
better still does anyone know who in Sydney is an expert on these engines?

Thanks
Jay

by noisy if you mean like a ticking - search "lifters" or "tappets", looks like you have what 99% of the rest of us also have :) mine is minimal using castrol edge 5w30 and others have had good words on amsoil 0w30 oil but this isnt the thread for that :p

Getting the power steering cooler away from the radiator, maybe in a wheel arch with some clever air ducts channeling some air through it, you could even try a water methanol that may help on the hotter days if you are concerned. You could even try to put you trans cooler in the wheel arches as well, this will bring the temp of the air coming into the engine bay down. Nissan are able to do this ,to some extent, with some of their inter coolers so it's not such a bad idea to try.

Just shim the bonnet up using a couple of washers on the hinges. Will help vent the hot air out and costs about 50c.

Thanks for your advice guys....

I might consider looking in to a aftermarket bonnet with vents, but there's not many around.

Would this actually make a difference?
