hey guys,

i have been a member here for a while so i could expand my knowedge of the VR4 (wanted one since yr6/1999) so i was over the moon when i found out they were availible for import a few years ago

anywhos, i want to buy a fun/turbo/jap car to drive so either:

Option one: keep current car (lancer vrx sedan) and buy a s13 silvia for shits'n'gigs. i park at southbank a bit, so dont want the silvia being stolen.

Option two: sell lancer and buy a galant

ygoslo

Galant for sure. Every Tom Dick and Harry has a Silvia, hell, even I owned one for a few weeks.

If you have wanted a galant for that long go for it. We had a silvia which we loved but I can say that the Legnum being AWD is way better absolutly love it, so I think you would be happier with the Galant than the Silvia . The lancer VRX are a beaut little car so my chioce would be the VRX or VR4.

Get a Galant..... Silvia's are fun but everyone has one

Galants are more fun, rarer in Oz, you have wanted one forever, and you have a forum full of people soaked in awesomeness to help you out with anything :D (Just to justify that, go check out the Silvia forums..... Its full of pole smokers, and I bet NS/OzVR4 member Tim can vouch for that one too!)

Buy the Galant, I wanted one when I discovered them while shopping for my Liberty, I didn't get one then, and I wanted one the whole time I owned the Liberty.. I loved the Liberty to bits, but when the time came to sell and buy the Galant I was the happiest chappy..

Buy what you really want, instead of settling for something else! As you won't ever be completely happy.. Especially if you have the chance to get one! (I couldn't afford the waiting time on importing, so until I found the perfect one locally, I waited).

If you buy the Silvia, then decide you still really want the Galant, it'll probably take you ages to sell the Silvia, and you may make a loss as well..

I'd go the Galant. Very fast for the price, sleeper effect (why did i lose to that magna at the lights) so less likely to get stolen, last you say that you've always wanted one. Of course i'm bias because i think these cars are awesome

go the galant there is no reason why it cant be your daily drive, i drive mine 40km's a day normally because its 10 to work and i normally come home for lunch i have been doing with for 12 months and no problems with it other then normal wear and tear the engines in these are a good engine, if you keep it standard or with slight mods they are a very reliable car.

no reason for just having a car for the weekend when with the galant you can enjoy driving it everyday.

if you like them get one you wont be disapointed, but i agree with Madhav Totally. dont get caught up in the whole "BUT WHAT IF ITS STOLEN" the first few months of owning my car were horrible because i was always worried about it, i had a good alarm but still worried, now 12 months on i have gotten over the whole getting stolen worry and i can actually enjoy my car fully, if its stolen i can replace it its insured so dont worry about it.

but get whatever you want as mentioned if you want a galant/legnum for sure get one they are great

Go the silvia....

Just thought I would post the opposite to everyone else :p

Honestly, what do you want the performace car for? If sliding and skids is your realm, then the silvia is for you and keep the VRX as a daily. If you like great handling and good pace from a standing start then the Galant is for you as long as you don't mind higher petrol bills every week and putting kms on your pride and joy.

Your asking a very bias community. Your going to get alot of votes for VR4 :p

what do you want the performance car for?

Just on the whole drifter vs touge debate. Just for your thoughts, a drifter you really need to take to a circuit to get the most out of your car. But the touge, you can always push your car (at the speed limit) around a windy mountain and have fun.

Agreed. Definitely a different answer on the Silvia Site..... Or the Skyline site Or the Commodore Site, or the Falcon Site....

Buddy, you like the Galant. You've dreamt about the Galant. Ditch the Lancer and get the Galant. I was in a similar position in the nineties when I first saw the EC5A. After many years of waiting, I finally have one and it was worth the wait. Get what you want, and hang the expense. Too many people settle for something that will do and regret it later. Get what you want and don't let anyone sway you from it.

First order of business..... Alarm.... It's your pride and joy. You want to enjoy it as you've worked hard for it.

And if you want to be 100% certain the car will always be safe, get a GPS alarm & tracking device. For $1k it will SMS you if it gets set off and you can track it using any browser, so even if it DOES get stolen (on a tilt tray or something) you can call the cops and send them straight to its location ;)

If i knew where my car was and who stole it, I wouldn't be calling the cops :p

While I agree with the sentiment, about a year ago a car was stolen over here with such a system and they tracked it to a warehouse. It was a chop-shop operation with around 40 stolen cars and a heap of people working around the clock, apparently connected to local organised crime. So sometimes its best to let the cops do their job ;)

I voted for the Galant, only because the choice you gave was a Galant or an RB20 Silvia. I hate RB conversions in Silvias... If you changed that to an SR20 Silvia my vote would be different.

Being someone who currently owns both, I'm in a good position to offer some unbiased advice I think. So here goes:

Silvia:

Pros:
Can look better than a Galant with the right stuff
Much bigger choice of aftermarket everything
Easier to make power out of
Lighter
Cheaper in every way (purchase, maintenance, modification)
More DIY fun to be had
Lots of stupid RWD fun to be had

Cons:
Ultra defect magnet as soon as you make it look nice
Not as comfy or spacious (if you call that a con)
Not as luxurious (see above)
Build quality not as high

Galant:

Pros
Easier to drive quick due to 4WD & AYC
Solid & reliable
Manual drivetrains are very strong
Luxurious and easy to live with
Lots of room
Fairly stealthy as far as Mr Plod attention goes

Cons
Heavy
Hard and expensive to make power
Aftermarket options are thin on the ground and often stupidly expensive
Complicated, to an extent

Basically, if you want to do anything serious in terms of modification buy the Silvia. If you want to just buy some coilovers and rims and have a nice, spritely cruiser, buy the Galant.

I think Tim put up a pretty good unbiased comparism here. I personally chose a VR-4 as I wanted something different. I see higlly modded Skylines/Silvias etc all the time but I had never seen a Galant/Leggy until I seen an import sitting in the yard last year.
Although I agree with Tim on the mods front, I think I will shoot myself If I see yet another modified S13/14/15...it's been done a million times now and to be honest I'm sick of seeing them. I think i'd almost be more suprised to see a stock example.

2000 Galant; metallic dark blue; manual; Recaros; Momo steering wheel; and sunroof!
Putting on my economic conservative hat, I would say that it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep the Lancer and get the Silvia. What this means is that you'll be paying 2 sets of rego's, insurances, maintenance costs etc.

I prefer to have the one car that is good at most things, rather than get 2 cars, each of which is good at some things and bad at others e.g. Lancer has no performance, Silvia has no practicality etc.

Besides, why just have fun on the weekend with the Silvia and put up with the cardigan drudgery of the Lancer during the week? Much better to have 7 days of a fun a week in the Galant!

If you enjoy performance motoring, the Lancer VRX has to go ;)

As a final note, I don't have any particular bias as I used to own an S15. I'm with Tim in that the SR20DET motor is the duck's guts when it comes to making cheap, reliable power with bolt on bits. Some of the SR20 crew had standard S15s and with nothing more than a CES racing exhaust and dump pipe, made an extra 50kW at the wheels on the dyno!

I don't really see the point in dropping an RB20 motor into the Silvia when you can easily get the same power with less fuss from the SR20.
