Hi all, as the title states, I was driving the other day with the A/C on and I gave it a little boot full only to hear pinging under the load. I turned off the A/C and tried it again and nothing, does anyone have any ideas why this would be happening when I turn on the A/C? (I only run 98 fuel)

You sure it was pinging and not the A/C compressor bearings? try turning it on while the engine is just idling.

Extra load, spastic ignition timing, pingity ping. If you're running the stock rom, they knock.

Nope definitely pinging, had the same problem in one of my other cars.

Yep stock ECU etc, so I gather there is nothing I can do about it?

I was thinking the comp too, but stock maps and pinging usually equals a stuffed fuel pump.... There's a guy on here that does tuning too ;)

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I have a can of the upper engine cleaner and was thinking about injector cleaner but everywhere you read there is someone bagging it as being a con. Will have a read of the link you posted Rob and go from there.

Gary

I would agree with most readily available injector cleaners not doing a lot. If you look at the cem stuff, it works for me (both diesel and petrol), or look at NEO and Redline products (not normally readily available in stores)
Ultimately though, best results from an injector removal and clean/test.

I know someone who can do this, might have to try an sort out some type of payment plan.

Tune is really the ultimate solution, as it includes diagnosis via wideband & knock sensor reading. After maintenance, it's the wisest thing you can do for a 6A13 as the stock fuel and ignition maps are fkng ludicrous under load. TME_Steve tune should be mandatory for vr4 ownership :D

Some say his beard has magical powers...

I'd be checking fuel pressure at the rail before going too far....

Small update, fitted a new fuel filter today fark the other one was dirty. Drained the excess fuel out of it and it was black, blew through it and the fuel that came out was full of small bits of debries smiliar to sand. Lets hope this may have been a contributing factor to the pinging problem and my woeful fuel consumption.

Gary

Could be, if it was running lean with the stock maps it will ping, doesnt explain poor economy though....

Driving to Goulburn tomorrow so will see how it performs.

Well have done 200k's today and have reached 287k's on the trip meter from the full tank with 1/2 left.
