Yes, I know the plod aren't necessarily our best friends but I think this is a good initiative:

You basically turn up to some designated places and the police will fit irreversible number plate screws for you, free of charge!

With the recent explosion in number plate theft for fuel runs, robberies and toll road shenanigans, this is a good idea.

This is even more so the case if you have a custom number plate. I've had my custom plate previously stolen and trust me when I say that it's a pain in the butt (report to police and RTA, pay to have new plates issued, hassle of being pulled over in future because your plate is reported stolen etc).

If you have any obvious defects on your car, I'd suggest that it's probably best that yo don't turn up to a police fitting station ;)

So what do you do if you want to move your custom plate to your new car - I presume you can still get the plate off somehow, and if so, won't the crooks just do the same thing?

same type of screws they use to do ignition barrels. part of it snaps off so your have to use a hamemr and a pin punch. it just takes them alot longer and they make noise doing it

They are a pain in the arse if you ever need to take your plates off. You need to get the dremel and cut a groove into the head to get a screwdriver onto them, hoping you don't slip and wreck your paint work. May as well just rivet them on if you want to go that way. Personally I'm going with button head cap screws (allen key) when I remember to stop at the bolt shop.

Apparently, the police have the required tool to remove the screws.

I think the idea is to make it harder for the crims to get your plates off so that they go to the next car with the "regular" screws.

They are just normal flat-head screwdriver type screws, but the side of the groove in the direction you twist to unscrew them is rounded off so the screwdriver can't grip.

They've been doing this in Vic for years. Fairly pointless really, why not just rivet them on? Not to mention the fact they'd probably have a sly look for defects while you were there... And my car somehow arrived in Australia with the cool tamper-evident Japanese numperplate bolt so I won't be changing any time soon!

If you don't feel like letting the cops look over your car then you can always buy the screws from auto shops for a few dollars and fit them yourself. I've seen them for sale before.
