Need some help:
Own: Mitsubishi Legnum 98 VR-4

Problem: can not go into reverse. Has trouble going into all other gears and needs considerable force to get them into gears. Clutch feels fine and have had the clutch fluid replaced and still no avail....

Any ideas

Selector cable???

it might be that the selector cable or that the mounts for the cable that sits on the gearbox is stuffed, it has happened to a few other people. Do the changes get better when the car is warm? If so you might also have the wrong oil in there, make sure you use GL4 oil, not GL5.

Ive just changed the oil as a matter of fact to Valvoline Syngard 10W - 40.

and i also put in a tapit lubricant due to heavy engine noise.

Could this be the problem??

Well my car is currently @ mechanics and he said he had changed some lubricant/oil but it still wasnt releasing apparantly.

Its just i believe the mechanic will try to dupe me on a new gearbox or something silly like that and then charge me an outrageous amount to have it put back in.....

I sourced other places but they seemed to believe (without seeing the car) that it had something to do with the clutch however i feel it personally has something to do with the gearbox.

Any ideas on what I could say to him 2mrw?

that it is the gear selector cables or the mounting bracket on the gearbox itself.

the bracket is about $70 or so from memory and count on about an hour of labour.

If it is a similar setup to the FTO, I'd almost guarantee that your selector cable brackets are loose or broken. Has happened to me twice in my FTO. Should be a DIY fix.

yeah id have no clue what im looking for, doing or altering lol.

thanks for the help guys but aparantly it needs a whole new clutch kit:confused:.

Its costing me in the vicinity of $1600 NZD which is a bit crap lol

Cheers

sounds strange. where did you take it to?

ohh and that is too much for a standard clutch as well!

You can get a replacement clutch waaaaaay cheaper than that. Unless that figure was including labour?
