Anyone else keen?

I might come for a look if i'm here

Saw a Legnum at Ruziks Time Attack recently. Was going ok (67's) but had a gearbox selector problem that ended their day.

oooooooooo.. thats my last day of holidays on the Gold Coast! :)
Will see if the Mrs will let me dissapear for the afternoon - would be good to finally meet ya lee..... Maybe see how the hire car goes around the track? LOL

Cool :D

It goes from 11am till about 4:30pm.

Would be great to meet you.

Dammit, if we were coming up on holidays a bit earlier I would love to come watch...

Well I and the car survived (mostly)!

Brought my PB down by 2 seconds to 66.4 for the sprint track. That was on the second lap of the last session just before I got lots of oil coloured smoke out the back :(

Looks like I over filled the engine oil and it's either ended up int the catch can which leaked everywhere or too much oil pressure has blown something else.

It didn't blow any smoke on the way home so hopefully it's just a temp situation and I haven't damaged anything serious. At least I have something else to do at the workshop day - install my catch can properly!

I've got some in-car video, it's probably going to be very embarrassing but I might post it for you all anyway :)

I spose you could put that 2 sec's down to the XYZ's?

I hope the smoke issue is minor.

dude.. post up the vids.. i wanna see it.. and about your engine.. was it sort of hesitating when you're giving it a break?

I had a look at the video and it says I did a 65.2 :)

My net is capped so I'll upload it on Monday

The engine wasn't really hesitating, just blowing lots of smoke. Like I said, by the time I drove it home it wasn't smoking at all.

Yeah, that's all I'd changed along with running correct tire pressures as opposed to the 40+psi recommended by the marshall at QR who gave the novice briefing grrrr

Also a bit more bravery into turns 1 and 2 :)

I think I know why the car was blowing lots of smoke. It looks like the catch can filled up which caused oil to get sucked out of the can and into the intake. I had a look at my plugs and they're still a bit oily. Will that just burn off or should I put new ones in? I took the car for a spin and it doesn't feel like it's down on power or anything.

Maybe I should de-coke and put new plugs in at the workshop day?

On another note, the stock oil breather line just goes back into the intake, does it rely on the intake helping to 'suck' excess oil/pressure out of the crankcase? What would happen if I didn't plumb my catch can back into the intake?

cheers

I ran an oil/air separator on my Silvia. The way i had it set up was illegal as i ran the drain line straight out the bottom of the car (not that i ever saw any oil come out) It was just a catch can with an exit out the bottom, an entry from the rocker cover breather and filled with stainless steel wool.

The breather as far as i know it is just that, a breather. It does not rely on suction, it just has to breath somewher so they put it back post AFM and pre turbo. There would be some suction but that would be purely a byproduct of how it is plumbed.

My set up worked a treat. I never had any issues with performance or reliability. It will save cases like you have experienced - no more oil or oily air in your intake.
I noticed a major difference before and after with how little the intercooler plumbing had oil lined in it (after around 6 months)

you can do it legally if you plumb it back to the inlet. Make sure you get a catch can that you can pack full of stainless wool (available from hardware shops). Also pack the wool in a stocking to prevent it from being sucked in to the engine if it is plumbed back. If the can is just empty it won't really separate the oil from the air.

bigger cans are better. a small catch can might easily fill up before the track day is over and overflow, either all over your engine bay or back to your inlet depending on how its plumbed in.

And well done on the new PB Lee!

Thanks for the tips Harry, my can is empty at the moment. Unfortunately I don' think I can open it up to get steel wool in there...
