R33 skyline front brakes UPDATE, link found

So, after iron chef dug up a car with r33 front brakes, my curiosity struck,

here's what i found

R33 gtst brakes(front):
disk diamter = 296mm x 30mm
disk weight = 8.6kg
caliper diamter: looks to be about 40ish mm from what joel posted below

caliper weight = 3.3kg, same calipers on r33 gtst, r34 gtt and all 300zx's (although the r34 uses a larger diameter disk)
number of pistons= 4
calipers made by sumitomo japan (i think)

these could be a extremely cheap alternative as they are available quite readily availbile; r33 gtst, r34's and z32's all share the same caliper

series 2 Vr4 (front)
2pot calipers with a 294mm x30mm disk

for comparison.
supra rz brakes (front)
4 pot calipers (4x42.8mm pots)
323mm x 30m rotors

-now points to address:

piston diameter of both calipers
mounting style of dimension of the r33 calipers
abs compatiblity

EDIT, link for brackets

CLICK ME CLICK ME (go to middle drop down on left hand side and find early ec5a or ec5w)

this company makes a bolt on bracket for the prefacelift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to suit a r33 or jza80 caliper

I can take photos and stuff if you tell me what to take photos of.

I have a pair of R33 calipers & rotors in a box in my shed.

R33 brakes are 100mm bolt spacing. See picture at the bottom for bolt pattern.

Brake calipers aren't designed specifically for ABS systems, so surely that would be irrelevant? All the ABS does is regulate or pulsate the pressure going to the caliper.

what is the relevance of the yellow section?

Yeah theres a few cars running R33 front brakes using NA JZA80 Rotors

I think its easier to get radial mounted calipers and get workshops to fabricate caliper mounts using aircraft grade alloy..

i was gonna do it using Porsche Boxter calipers and evo rotors.. til I got hold of FL hub carriers..

what is the relevance of the yellow section?

The pics are off Zilvia. They are R32 GTR calipers, though they are essentially an identical caliper to the R33. The yellow is just outlining how they are different.

How do VR4 calipers mount? The same as above?

From memory , skyline people have also used evo brembo's as upgrades , vice versa.

correct but brembos are fairly expensive and rare compared to the sumitomo calipers

Hmm I'd be interested in doing this to the Magna rather than using 380 brakes.

ive done this upgrade on my silvia.

and from the research i did when doing the upgrade..
- r32/z32/s14/s15 brakes are all basically the same, just the casting on the caliper is slightly different. all use almost identical sized rotors and the calipers are cast iron.
- r33/r34 (identical) brakes are alloy and about half the weight, plus are the biggest u can go before gtr brakes.
- r32 gtr brakes are similar to 33's, however much more rare, expensive and the rotors are drilled.
- r33/r34 gtr brakes. obviously brembos and are the biggest and best u can get.

btw i just skimmed thru this thread, are u planning on putting nissan brakes on ur mitsubishi?

lol read the thread steve haha

iron chef dug up a legnum in j-town with r33 front brakes, this sparked this thread...rather then cloggin up the forsale thread

Hmm, the PFL spacing is 130mm and the FL spacing is 160mm. If these are 100mm then I think PFL owners still might be out of luck, but it might be a way for FL owners to go up to 4 pot calipers cheaply

how will 160mm be better then 130mm?

160mm caliper mount spacing is standard on most evo brembo's and are often found cheap in ebay.. :)

I still believe that the 2G (95-99) Eclipse GST/GSX aftermarket big brake kits will fit in S1 vr4 without having any issues...

What I was referring to is that if you have 130mm PFL hubs it is impossible to make a bracket for the 160mm brembo spacing because there simply isn't enough room in there. With the 100mm spacing you have 60mm in total instead of 30mm and that might create enough room to let you do it.

well it looks like PFL owners will hav to upgrade theyre knuckes/hub carrier anyway

Not necessarily.

Just use an offset dog bone bracket. Nothing says you have to try and mount the caliper(100mm) dead in between the standard(130mm) mounts.

Using an offset bracket will also allow you to chose a larger disc that fits, and make the bracket up to suit that.

Bracket I'm talking about... This one is for R33 brakes on an R31, but the same idea would apply.

Various people in the UK have tried things like that and it hasn't worked for them. I must admit I'm not sure on the exact specifics, my facelift already has Brembo's :)

On another train of thought, the current falcons have 6 pot F and 4 pot R Brembo's, does anyone know what sort of mounting they use?

How has that type of thing not worked? Too much flex? Braking doesn't improve?

No idea on Falcon Brembos, I'll go play with Google and see if it helps.

EDIT:

This is a G4 Falcon kit on Just Jap. Not sure if this is a generic picture or not, but I believe the flat section on the mounts goes to the caliper, which would make the BA-BF Falcon gear also radial mounted like Galants/Evos/Skylines etc.
