A supercharged 380 sports sedan adds punch to Mitsubishi's large car lineup, writes BRUCE NEWTON.

Mitsubishi is determined to convert the TMR 380 motor show concept revealed in Sydney this morning into a production vehicle.
The fiery red 380 features a supercharged version of the 3.8-litre V6 engine developed by West Australian-based specialiast Sprintex. Power increases by 31 per cent to 230kW and torque by 29 per cent to 442Nm.
Mitsubishi boss Rob McEniry revealed potential customers had already tried to place orders for the TMR 380 after sightings on the internet.
"We have been a little embarrassed by that, so we are going to have to move this along pretty quickly," he said. "It's just a matter of working through the homologation."
McEniry suggested that some components may come to market as accessories, while a two tier model range could also be considered. A version with the concept's aggressive bodywork could be on-sale this year, while a higher-spec version that adds the performance parts could appear in the first half of 2007.
Pricing for a full-house production TMR 380 is far from sorted, but the most obvious established rival is Ford's Falcon XR6 Turbo. It retails for $46,405. The most expensive 380 is currently the $44,990 GT.
The TMR 380 was one of two supercharged concept cars shown by a local manufacture at Darling Harbour today. Toyota also presented its Aurion Sports Car Concept, which will produce 240kW when it goes into limited production mid-2007.
The Mitsubishi takes its name from Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, which runs the company's Australian Rally Championship campaign and also performs road vehicle modifications.
TMR put the show car together at its Melbourne base, based on Mitsubishi's design brief of improving the performance and appeal of the 380 while delivering the flavour of the iconic Lancer Evo series.
It also presented a hotted up version of the Lancer Evo IX named the TMR 220. Aimed at sprint and hill climb enthusiasts, the 220 goes on-sale in January with pricing expected to be pitched between $75,000 and $80,000.
The TMR 380 includes Ralliart developed six-pot brakes at the front and four-pot Brembos at the rear, a 50mm lowered ride height, adjustable Koni shock absorbers, 19-inch alloy wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber.
Externally, the TMR 380 has a full body kit and twin bonnet scoops. Features inside include Recaro leather seats and a Fujitsu 10 sound system

Funny how when it came out many critics said "a supercharge FWD won't sell" - well look at the TRD Aurion. Seen quite a few of them on the road.

Apparently they were a pretty good car according to the reports i had read about it (the 380).... The only thing they hated was the FWD, but stated that Mitsi compensated for this in their design minimalising torques steer and optimising handling, apparently

I've been in one and treated it fairly badly. Torque steer wasn't an issue. The issue was a complete and total lack of grip at the front wheels with just the standard engine. Even in 3rd!

sounds like fun! any form of an lsd/vlsd setup or just an open diff?

vlsd = vivacious loose slipping differential.... haha

ei: doesnt really work!

um I think thats the point.............Well it is for me !!?!!

The Motor Report had a drive of this too i think, sorry i cant be assed finding the link :P

Does look like an agressive car but i dunno about the power and understeer. I get angry with the understeer the legnum produces if i get lazy

sounds nice if it were awd - heard about this a few years ago thought it was canned as i never saw one on the road.

Nice looking car I reckon, but i just can't see how that much power through the front wheels can be a good thing. You get massive wheelspin on a 3.0 Magna let alone that beast of a thing. Have fun getting out of a oily puddle in the wet, would spin like mad.

its all about how you drive it and apply the power.. obviously its not going to be the same as the awd however cruising on the highway u save a shitload on fuel because ur only powering 2 wheels.. fwd has some benefits aswell...

Haha says the magna driver :P

Yeah I get that. Let's face it too you noobs, it's not about straight line power.... unless you into drag racing.

It's all about the skill of the rider.

I have a bike that has 163HP at the rear wheel and lap around 1:55 when i'm not chasing some one at EC.

I've also seen a guy do 1:55 on a cbr250.

this is all unrelated to the conversation. I would never buy a fully worked super powerful FWD. I don't like FWD's at all. Either AWD or rear for me.

I guess it's all about preference. Some people probably like how AWD's handle.

they are the most fuel efficient configuration that's for sure.

i enjoyed my old lancer (fwd obviously :P) when i had it - not that it had much power. i was proud of my 70 odd kw at the wheels :D (yes, i actually had it dyno'd for the fun of it. $50 cash from a pretty local place when i lived in redcliffe)

Also seen a few 4g63t fwd lancers, and they still fly :P no spinning once its going.
