I've recently advertised my legnum on gumtree I had someOne 6 hours later send me a txt from some sort of service which I can't call or send a txt back too offering to buy my car for more than what it's advertised for. I'm a little bit sceptical as they are asking for my paypal email accOunt to transfer the funds into immediately. He also wants the address so he can pass that onto his courier who will take delivery of the vehicle asap.

Does this sound like some sorta scam? I've read on other advertisements people stating no internatiOnal buyers, no payments via paypal.

Can anybody offer me any advice or direction as to what cause of action to take, I'm thinkin it's hardly worth the hassle however they could be legit....?!?!

definitely a scam.. specially when they say that they're currently in overseas due to work or some other reason..

don't think you can do much about it apart from reporting it to gumtree (if they care) then block their ##

NEVER EVER give out your email, paypal details, and address..

if they have your paypal details & your home address then thats more than enough for paypal to allow them access to your paypal.. i think anyway..

It is almost certainly a scam, after all who buys a car for more than asking price without inspecting it. I remember another member posting a thread about the same basic thing, something about the buyer replying with a fake paypal receipt and so on (I don't remember the exact details). Another thing worth keeping in mind is they may simply want the address to just plain and simply steal it old-skool style. That being a risk you just have to take when letting people look at your car, which is why it's always smart to sell a car by letting people inspect it at another address like your parents place or a friend.

I would just let that buyer go and wait for a legit one to come along.

I had exactly the same thing when I advertised on Gumtree, they are definitely hoax/scams. Don't reply.

Definately a scam - i had this with my Aristo on carsales. They want you to send them an email, they have some story about wanting to buy the car for a family member interstate but they cant look at it cos they are away with work, so will just send you the money via paypal and arrange for pickup.

If it sounds too good to be true, it generally is :( Just ignore it

This scam is old as and relates to gumtree and firesport or any other advertising website without security. This scam had me once, you can give your paypal details which is only actually your email, but does nothing. They can't get you really. They only scam you to pay for shipping which they ask you to pay for through western union, but by then even you would of already clicked, unless of course your really really retarded.

So it's a horrible scam that doesn't even work for them, no hacks involved. Just only wastes your time.

I did think it was, actually he arranged to cover all paypal fees and shipping etc and I've considered them wanting to steal it old school style etc and have really quized him on a few aspects, thanks for ensuring my initial thoughts were correct guys, I did think it was too good to be true...

I played along with one of them for a while, they sent me an email asking my details. I gave them my 'Nigerian' bank account details. They actually replied with 'lol'.

i've had some sms sent to my mobile, where i couldnt reply to the number, the high-tech part of it is that the name "John" appear on the sms sender. Makes it look like someone from my phone book actually sending me sms about my car.
I could not think i have friend name "John" stored on my mobile, got me thinking for a while, then realised this just another scam.

my car is advertised on carsales btw, that's where the scammer got my phone number

That link is hilarious.

I particularly liked this reply the guy got.

that's funny Dave, i can so much understand you.. Yep if you wanna transfer the pickup fee online iy would have to be with ya credit card but I SWEAR there is nothing wrong!! that's how it works..i'm assuring you 100% safety...there is nobody that would help me, i divorced with my ex few months ago and i have no kids and my dad died years back..why can't you just go to any post office close to ya and get it transferred at a post office via western union.. they do transfer money via western union at any post office..ok? but transferring it online has nothing to harm you or hack your credit card.. Ok Friend? have that in mind.. assuming i have a credit card, i would have transferred the pickup fee myself to em but have Got none and God knows!! i hope you understand..

Sounds legit.

I had the same thing on Carsales when I was selling the Trueno. "I would like to purchase this as a gift for my father, but because I work on an oil rig I cannot come see it" blah blah, Paypal, blah.

Two similar stories from two different contact sources, both saying Paypal.

i had a similar thing happen a couple of years back and they acutually called thru a deaf/typing service... they are very creative

my brother and my parents nearly got stung by this few months ago... until i took control of their paypal accounts n sussed it out for them...
my old man went down to the post office to pay an everything... lucky i had workd it all out and rang him while he was in the line... PHEW he said lol

fuckn dodgey bastard... its fair simple, dont sell a car without sum1
a) calling you and speaking casually
b) seeing the car in person.
option ask them 2 do a vehicle inspection.

funny story tho, i sold my lancer 2 a couple in alice springs... they didnt view the car... but they had *motorcheck* suss the car n give them a report... they ended up buying it and peter kittle took the car after i was paid...

was still dodge as, but the cash is spent and the car is gone... win win
