Hi NSW peoples,

If I sell a car to someone interstate, do I need to do anything locally to inform the RTA that the car has moved? A notice of disposal or anything?

I believe you do Brad, I think from memory you have 14days to do it!

Isn't there a "Notice of Disposal" form on second page of rego papers thats detachable

It can also be done online, here is the link to the RTA forms section

I thought you only had to do a "notice of disposal" in 14 days (of the date of the sale) but it was up to the new owner to re-register the car interstate paying relevant transfer costs to RTA then exemption from stamp duty but a application fee etc. once they get it home.

Your responsibilities end with taking all your VR4 buddies to the pub to celebrate and to work out where we spend your new found capital on the Super... lol

Haha that money goes to getting a different car for work.

Bradc will wave his banstick on me if I used the Super as a work car hehe..

Yea I knew it was up to the buyer to re-register the vehicle etc etc. Was just curious what my involvement was. I sold my Mazda 929 locally & all we had to do was get them to fill out a transferral of registration form.
No idea what to do if the buyer is interestate.

I am sure that all you need to do is to fill out the transfer slip, both with the buyer and seller signature. Write out a receipt of sale, with both signatures, and photocopy. And then hand your transfer into the RTA as you normally would do. It is then up to the buyer that when he/she gets to there address to inform their motor of transport with the buyers slip, receipt (purchase of car), and in some instances they may need to get a blue slip (RWC). I bought a Supra in QLD a few years back, filled everything out up there, went to the motor registry with all the transfer papers, bill of sale, and RWC, registered, drove to NSW, and then had to get a blue slip, and transfer it into NSW plates, then send the QLD plates back. So basically, just fill out the relevant information required as per normal, and hand it in to the RTA, the hard stuff is up to the buyer. Once the RTA has the transfer and the like from you, the car is out of your hands. The buyer than has 14 days to transfer the car into their name and new address. I hope this helps Brad.

The other thing to remember when you provide the Notice of Disposal to the RTA is also cancel the E-Tag attached to that registration plate Brad, otherwise any tolls racked up will be yours.....

Yep already on the list of things to do.

Got to sell the thing first.... but all signs point to yes hopefully!

Yeah Brad, all you have to do is fill in the notice of disposal (or whatever its called) as you would if you sold it locally. The buyer then re-registers it in their chosen state. They will have to hand in your plates when they re-register it.

I sold one of my previous cars interstate, this is all I did and had no repercussions.
