Slight vibration - what would it be?

I have a slight vibration (probably more like a knock) that seems to be coming from the front. It is not there all the time, but is most noticeable under acceleration (it is a quick vibration under hard accel) and when slowing down (at slow speeds it becomes a "thump......thump.....thump").

I can feel it though the floor, especially at slow speeds. It is present with the clutch disengaged and engaged.

I'm thinking a front driveshaft. Would I be right?

My car is manual, if that makes any difference.

I don't think it is bad enough to be wheels... Most of the time you wouldn't even notice it unless you were actively listening/feeling for it.

Interestingly, my Dad's Magna has an almost identical issue, which leads me to believe it is something in the front end like a driveshaft or CV.

lower control arms or
the bushings (cant remember correct name) that allow the wheels to move forward/back under accelleration/decelleration

It may be the tyres or somthing in the tread. It may also be a wheel alignment issue is it felt thru the steering wheel at all? Does it change under any different condition? ie hot cold weather power on or off (you did say earler but does it change in intensity?)

Check the front and rear roll stoppers .When they start to fail the gearbox can rest /knock on the centre crossmember.

You feel it more through the floor than anything else! It isn't a steering wheel vibration. Wheel alignment was the first thing I had done (as it is with all my cars...).

Control arm bushes could well be shot, I might get a 3rd opinion on them. The first 2 opinions came back 50/50!!

It increases in intensity (speeds up - thumpthumpthump) under load. It is also reasonably noticeable between about 2-2500 rpm at very light throttle.

just in case - though its probably not this - jack up the side of the wheel you suspect, grab it and give it a really hard shake to see if your wheel bearing is shagged (it shouldnt move side to side at all - if it does you need to check the parts guide for the bearing # asap)

Drive shafts in front..Lee had same problem and so did another friend. Ask Lee would be the best bet.

That's my amateur diagnosis too. It is just too minor to be something like loose wheel etc. It could possibly be the wheel bearing though I guess.

What's a driveshaft worth?

Hhmm.. seems like a strange one..

I suggest you jack up the car, on the side where you think the sound is coming from.. Roll the tire, while rotating run your hand on the tread, see if there are 'wild flat spot' or unusual bumps.. Also while at it, feel your rim if it's mangled..
