Hey Guys,

Not sure if this is a stupid question or not but I'm looking at picking up a pioneer head unit and currently have a carozerra 2din md/cd player - I spoke to an unamed car audio shop and they advised they have had a Legnum in before and apparently the mounting is an issue because "the Japanse mounting can be different".

Basically what issues will I have with mounting a unit myself on the exisitng brackets and will a generic utility tray or pocket install with ease? (the retailer mentioned something about Genuine Mitsu pockets costing up to $180)

Also does anyone know if the carozerras have a standard pioneer connector for say the DEH-P9850BT?

I can handle wiring but I really cbfed with mounting brackets etc and I don't want to pull anything apart to find out nothing fits.

I've got a feeling he might of been trying to entice me to get them to install the unit for me.

Cheers :)

They're having you on bro haha

The screws for both JDM and Aus spec HU's are the same, it'll just bolt straight in.

Worst that could happen is that you will have to drill new holes.... No biggie

Wiring you may or may not have to do, just check the fitting and configuration on the plug :)

And a pocket will be about $10-$20 at a local joint like autobarn or repco

What he said ^

And I would take their advice as a good reason not to go there for anything! I hate people that lead people up the garden path to make more money. All HU as far as I can remember for last 15 years at least have had ISO mounting as standard so all are the same.

Just a thought, maybe the last Legnum they had in had a MMCS unit. While the mounting wouldn't be any different, they may have been a bit lost on what to do with the cables running to it.

But you gotta love sales men pulling your leg.

Alberts Cannington...

I'm not usually a fan of car audio places, but from what I've heard/read is that the Cannington store is highly regarded. Saying that I've never been there myself

Meh they may of genuinly had an issue with a previous Galant/Legnum but to me it sounded like they were trying to get me to install with them and not DIY - they definately know their stuff when it comes to audio equiptment though.

It is just the typical "oo it's an import, I'm going to have to charge you triple" crap that you get in this country.

I remember years ago I was trying to get someone to install the digital climate control unit in my Silvia. I took it to an air con place complete with printed instructions and advice that it should take an inexperienced person 30 mins to 1 hour to do it. The guy ummed and ahhed and said "yeah the thing with these imports is once you get in there it is usually all diferent from what the wiring is supposed to be. I'd have to budget 4 hours for it". I told him that it was meant to be very easy, showed him the instructions again, and suggested he might want to adjust the quote a bit. He replied with "well if it is so easy why don't you do it yourself". So I did. With zero electrical experience.

You get used to it after owning an import for a while.

The mmcs version is a complete seperate part from the cd/tape player.
i still have my mmcs and a normal aftermarket head unit and it all went in fine and i still have my touch screen just i cant change cd's anymore (cd stacker went to live in the bin)

I recently just swapped over my headunit (double-din sanyo thing from Japan to an single-din alpine unit) and it was a straight-forward process. Just grabbed a couple wiring harnesses and the head unit bolted directly to the stock (I'm pretty sure it's stock) mounting bracket.

Couldn't imagine it being much of an issue.

I can handle wiring but I really cbfed with mounting brackets etc and I don't want to pull anything apart to find out nothing fits.
I was the same, didn't want to pull anything apart only to put it back together and take it apart again, but there is no better way of learning and finding out what you need by doing this.

just take it to autobarn lol

Unfortunately WA doesn't have Autobarn, we have Autobahn, but they're service workshops.

Maybe Brad could update us on this, but I'm wondering what H/U's the stock VR4's had, or had as an option. Obviously the tape deck was bottom of the line, no optioned stereo. You could get MMCS, but did the Pioneer Cazzozeria (sp?) DVD decks come as an option as well? Or were they just a really popular aftermarket unit in Japan? Just curious as I always thought ALL VR4's came stock with a CD headunit minimum.

The japanese VR4's all came with a tapedeck h/u with a cd stacker std. I know the NZ new cars came with a Kenwood cd player of some sort....
