Hey guys!

I would like to go in search of street art in Melbourne CBD while I'm down this weekend. I know of Hosier Lane with all the graffiti through it, can you actually drive your car in to that lane or is it restricted to walking only? I've walked up and down it before, and seem to remember at one point a new BMW having a professional shoot there last time.

Do you guys know of anymore cool spots I could take some pics? :p

Even if just scenic shots, not car. But car would be great too haha

If you want to know what Hosier Lane looks like with a VR4 in it...

:D

Now, a few things.

The photo is looking south towards "Federation Square" and Flinders Street. The lane is one-way and I am facing the wrong way. There is a minor t-intersection (access lane, 15m long) a quarter of the way down.

I waited for a day of drizzle to get the "wet cobblestone" look and was DAMN LUCKY to get a shot with no background traffic or people walking down the lane. I snapped off nine at roughly the same angle (shooting low of course, level with the side mirror) and this one came out the best with a small touch of vignetting post-photo.

On the right of the shot, that doorway is for a youth/homeless outreach centre so just politely ask/acknowledge any people milling about. I just went "G'Day guys, mind if I take a photo here?" as I got out.

Couriers like to use this as a short-cut as well. Getting out may require a few turns since it's illegal to reverse into an intersection as you know.

LOL I had to reverse out of a lane way after a GPS told me to go down it, and noticing it was blocked by pylons and a TRUCK. In peak hour. In Melbourne. Now THAT was annoying haha..

Thanks dude, thought you could drive on it but wasn't sure!! Hopefully I have a bit of luck and can scare the people off, woo :)

There is some awesome street-art to be found (back streets off Chapel Street, for example) but since they are quite narrow, you can only take offset front and offset-rear photos (even with a fish-eye lens), capturing the front/rear of the car but losing the street art you are looking for. Chinatown is too narrow and busy unfortunately and inconsistent. What is street-art one day is then poster-bombed for the next music festival the next.

Richmond/Fitzroy/Collingwood (St Kilda not as much except the empty lot next to the Palais Theatre) and some inner city locations also vary wildly, but that's half the fun of scouting.

Have fun :)

We recently went down Hosier and my Mrs. was devistated that her favourite street artist Fafi design had been painted over.

Shame that great photo is ruined by the ugly, eyesore graffiti :p

Loki's silver block of colour actually contrasts well with the colour/chaos of the background. To each their own :)

Gavin thanks for the heads up about being able to drive down the lane :) the random people sitting there out front of the youth centre, well, half of them loved looking over the car and watching us take photos. As well as asking stuff about photography and the car. The other half, let's just say they were happy when we left LOL "yeah, get outta here."

Also during the time I was there, there was groups of random people taking photos of my car with the graffiti as well hahaha.. May end up on some randoms facebook or blog LOL. Or known to them as "some dickwad parked his car amongst the art, so I took down his plates to complain"

Anyway, got some shots :)

Also didn't know where there was a self wash carwash place, so the bugs stayed and I'm too lazy to photoshop them out properly :D

Awesome shots man. Is the Stormie Mills piece still up? I love his work. Might have to stroll up & have a look tomorrow, I'm in Melb for work.

I'm not sure who did what, there was some new artwork that I hadn't seen there before, and someone random who was talking to me was complaining because they painted over someone famous's work with another one lol
