That noise..... Vids up now.. Go Listen!

Alright I do plan on recording it... I'm kind of hoping my mechanic will beable to pick it but I'm not that sure he will.

It sounds like it's coming from the front left. It happens more often when cold or turning right while going low speed, like a round-a-bout.

Some times it will happen when just taking off out of the drive way going straight down the street.

The noise:
Imagine an old steel floor fan where the fan blades are loose. If you spin it by hand the blades occasionally will hit the mesh cover making a ding / metallic ping noise. If you spin the fan faster the noise will increase with speed, but not necessarily at a uniform frequency.

I think someone else described a weird noise they where getting which they said was like marbles rattling in a can.... I could call it something like that too.

I even sometimes get just 1 clang when I go over a speed hump, the repeated clang only happens when going right.

So my mechanic has had it on stands and said he can't 'see' anything wrong under it.

I'd almost say it sounds like a loose exhaust, but the sound is to rotational for that.

My guess is the CV... I imagine we have front CV's / drive shafts. What throws me on that is that is doesn't sound like any dying CV I have ever heard before. They are normally a much lower clunky crunchy noise, this is a high dry clangy noise.

Also I seem to get a fair bit of road noise out of the front left. Like a whirring noise you could think is a wheel bearing and may well be. It get louder and higher frequency as speed increases... at 100 it is hard to ignore... maybe I need a wheel alignment / balance as well.

Cheers for the feed back.

Plan B is just going to one of the Leggy freindly workshops. Only thing is I can dump the work on our company account if I get it done with my local guy.

VIDEO'S of the noises.

If you turn it up you can hear them both pretty clearly well you can hear something anyhow.

I had the "marbles in a tin" sound, and it turnout out to be the dust cover at the front of the driveshaft/rear of the transfercase. Where the output shaft comes out of transfer case and connects to the rear driveshaft, on the front of the driveshaft there is a 2 piece dust cover, sort of like 2 C shapes sitting inside each other, if you know what I mean. The outer one (which you can 100%) was tight as, but the inner cover (which is 90% hidden) was loose, hitting the outer cover.

Note that it only came loose after I had the trans replaced, and the clowns that replaced the trans left the clip out which holds the inner cover in place, thus it was rattling.

I dont know if this will be your problem though as your g/box hasn't been out (since youve had it anyway) and you get a clang over bumps, whereas my noise was only under/after accelleration and at speed.

I took some video of the road noise. It's pretty obvious. My mechanic think's it's just the wheels or something. I recon it's more sinister.

So i'll throw them up when I get home at about 8:30 tonight :/

I'll find a quiet round about and get some vid's of that clanging noise too on the way home.

bump for vid's added!

As far as wheel bearings, I remember changing them on my alfa and it wasn't hard at all... Maybe it's harder in a leggy? :|

The road noise one is like a whirring wob wob wob smooth sound.

The clanging one is more of a ticking clang sound like 2 not heavy metal things coming together on rotation.

FOUND!

It just the exhaust bumping on the drive shaft about 1/2 way down the car.

It only happens turning right because turning left the exhaust swings away from the drive shaft, not towards it.

Good news is that there are rub marks on the drive shaft but no paint missing yet.... so all I need to do is bend the exhaust tabs back to where they are supposed to be and it will be houses.

I think it must have got a little squashed on a speed hump or something which has caused it to start rubbing.

good to know its nothing major.. I'd say it'll cost you $50 to get a shop to do it or free if you hammer it yourself.. LOL

Yeah I'm going to hook up an extra mount tonight which holds it in the right place.

Does anyone know how much it costs to replace the wheel bearings? Ive got a 'roaring' noise coming from the rear drivers side wheel when pulling up to traffic lights/roundabouts.

Brad you want to get a set of eclipse hubs. A search for "eclipse wheel hub" will result in this thread :)

Are you sure you don't just have worn brake pads?

Yah Im pretty sure that its not the brakes is not a squelling noise it's kinda like when you back off the throttle with a noisy exhaust. 'bup bup bup'

Gonna take it into Mitsi tommorrow to book in a service so will get them to take a look.

If you've worn the pads down to bare metal they won't squeal, they'll make a nasty grinding noise.

Let us know how you get on :)
