Timing belt change help.

I'd recheck the timing marks first but I would be worried there is some damage to a valve with it not being locked

So I did my timing belt and water pump, took ages but I got it done.

I didn't lock the rear cams properly so they flicked back and forth a million times while I tried to get the belt on and timing marks correct. Also had loads of trouble with getting the tensioner right but finally won.

So. I start the car and I runs but it has a regular and new tick out of the rear cam bank. It idles fine and stuff but the tick increases with revs and is obviously out of the cam area. So I har not driven it.

I guess I didn't get the timing right. The timing marks on the cams looked right and the crank stayed where it was when I rotated to get the timing marks to line up in th first place... So...

Have I got the timing wrong should I pull it down and check the cam timing marks?
Or could have flickng the radar bank back and forth so many times have caused a problem when I was trying to get the belt on?

The crank timing mark as at about 3 o'clock when the cams were at there marks is that normal?

So long story what do you think? I'm kind of hoping I can still save the money from taking it to a mechanic.. But am driving 1000k's in 5 days.... Goop team :-)

You really REALLY should have locked those cams mate, but no point crying over spilt milk. When you lined the timing marks up on the cams did you offset them, or just line them up? When you replace the timing belt there is a small amount of slack that needs to be taken up, so the timing marks are offset slightly to compensate. Once the engine's turned over a few times everything lines up correctly, but you must make sure you offset them correctly during reassembly. Do you know if you did this correctly or not?

I doubt you'd have valve interference with a very slight timing misalignment like that, so I doubt you've bent anything unless you've managed to misalign a cam 180°... But you'd REALLY know about it if you'd done that! ;)

When mine was done by the previous owner and I assisted. We just made sure all the marks lined up. There is a mark at each cam pulley and the crankshaft, we had to move the rear cam pulley a couple of times to get the correct alignment for when the tensioner was set. I too agree that it is unlikely you have bent a valve. Undo the covers and take a pic for us all to have a look at.

All good I enlisted the help of my old man to have another go. The rear bank was out by 1 notch. The crank wasn't at 3 o'clock like I though, the notch was at 3pm, but the dimple was right.

I made a locking tool for the rear bank which made life a lot easier.

Good news is it only took about 2 hours the 2nd time. All done and running fine again. Damn I missed driving my car.

And yes I Can copy and paste... but I forgot. Sorry :-)

2 hours is stupid fast. I just did mine again however it still took ages, but i'm on holidays so there was no pressing need to be fast. BUT, mine had jumped as well. Rear bank both advanced 2 notches and the front bank 1 notch. SO re-did it paying particular attention to the balancers location. TDC and then rotated it back one notch like the guide says but i have the heavy feeling it's wrong. I know the slop that's mentioned, but mine had a sh*t load of it. Didn't seem right as when i checked everything the timing was well out. ie at TDC on the balancer, both sets of cams were advanced. The guide says it should be fine but mine isn't.. Can anyone shed any light on the "slop" issue please. I feel i may have to take it apart again tomorrow.
Took it for a drive, still a bit breathless off boost but pulls very hard once on.
