Vehicle Vibration?!?

Right, Straight into the thick of things.

purchased a 1997 legnum tiptronic the other day, 2.5 v6. My problem with it is this. Once you hit about 100 km an hour the car actual starts to vibrate a little, not too noticable. at 120 it vibrates pretty solidly, very noticable, very un - natural. at 130-140 the rear view mirror is even goin hard! it just worries me a bit, any knowledge about it would be greatly appreciated so i can spend my money and fix it (ahh, the beauty of the vehicles we love.)
Very hard to describe, but it's not a rattle in the engine or anything, it's definately the whole car vibrating, as though somethings not tightened...but it all is. the pevious owner had an issue with the 4wd which he paid for and got fixed, so any ideas???

Also, when braking, it's not a consistent brake, it's intermittent (You know what i mean?) like the push on the pedal is constant, but the car is like...slowing down a bit, then buttons off, then brakes some more. this is only apparent when slowing to a stop, like from 50 km to 0, not slowing down from 100 or nothing. could this be the brake discs needing machining?

Shot peeps, a few phat rides in here, hopefully do mine up a bit like you guys!

Crazy ass Zoidberg. hehe. And here he is again! haha Great red thing, your so crazy.

get your wheels balanced as well as 4 wheel alignment..

with your brakes.. does it shudder really hard when you stump on it?!

Check tyre pressure - then wheel balance.

New rotors probably needed. Common problem. I lived with mine for about 6 months, until I had to break sharply from 120 to 60 and the car became quite unstable.

Easiest thing to check even before getting a wheel alignment is to check and make sure your wheel nuts are all tight.

As for wheel alignments be sure to go to some place where they can do 4 wheel wheel alignments. I've just had mine done and it vibrates more now at higher speeds than before. And yes it will be going back to get done again correctly this time.

I just had another thought is it possible that you have a buckled rim?

I had the same probelm. Get a wheel balance and alignment.

I also found out my rack ends were on the way out so I had them replaced.

thought most shops check the tyre pressure before commencing wheel balancing?!

Certainly. What I meant was that checking the tyre pressure is something that Pdubtnz could do himself before taking it to the shop. A few PSI is all it will take to cause a vibration, and it's worth checking before handing over cash for a wheel balance that may not be needed.

sorry guys Alignment problems dont cause vibrations not even at their worst.
four wheel balance should fix this problem but if not could possibly be the tyres themselves especially if the ex-owner drove it hard, have you cheap tyres on there?
if none of this works maybe a c-v joint?

I would have a look at the front roll stopper and other mounts to see if they have collapsed and the transmission/engine is sitting on the cross member in the centre of the car. This will cause the vibration throughout the car

Wheel balance for sure. I've got the same happening on my stockies at the moment. I've got some pretty stingie no-name tyres on them too so i don't think that helps.

LOL @ your signature man wtf :ROFLMAO:

Man, you guys just gave me more info than i thought poss! definately gonna get that stuff checked, your right on the 120 to 60 buzz, stomp on the brakes and car becomes real unstable, and it currently just has the stockies on it so one could be buckled, i thought about the tyre pressure thing, just hadn't done anything to it yet, also thought it could be the engine mounts etc. but was unsure, i guess i'll just try it all until something fixes it! didn't even realise theirs a 4 wheel wheel balance? so theirs a difference? thats good to know...

just did about 500 kms in it yesterday driving around nz for the arvo, bloody love the thing! such a comfy car, so much better then my old bmw (=SHITE.) was tearing past other vehicles on the road, and it's not even bloody twin turbo, does anybody know what horsepower it is standard?

also, 19s can fit aye? what sorta profile tyre will it need?

Is your car a 4 stud or 5 stud? If it is a 4 stud then I wouldn't buy wheels that big, they will be hard to resell. 215/35/19 and 225/35/19 will fit ok with a 35-42mm offset.

It will have 129.5kw as standard.
