Hey guys I did a search and probably missed what I'm looking for but I thought if this hasn't been brought up before then this would be a good bit of info for people like me who aren’t 100% sure on what the MMCS can play.

Alright my question, as you might have guessed, is what types of media can the MMCS play? For example Cassette tapes, CD's, MP3 CD's that sort of thing. I will probably be picking up my new Legnum this weekend and want to know what sort of music media to take so I’m not driving silently back home.

Cheers in advance guys.

It has a cassette slot at the front and normally a 10 stack cd player in the boot. If you have a tv tuner in the back then you can connect in whatever you want via the audio and video inputs

As Brad says, cassette tape and CD via the stacker... and of course AM/FM radio. But you'll need a frequency expander to convert to local stations, the Domino units are the best.

You'll probably have the dual Diversity antenna system in the rear glass like me, so you need two of the expanders in order to get the most reliable reception. They are about $15 each is you look around, but require a little fiddling behind the MMCS with the antenna plugs.

If you have the TV tuner it is impossible to make it work here, but the bonus is that you get a stereo audio input (for your MP3 player) and a video input (if you want to add a reversing camera).

And as a bonus, with some hacking I've found that you can customise your MMCS boot screen:

Ah yeah, the fabled English conversion disc. Is that from ITEX or somewhere else? I started trolling the CD-ROM with the hex editor to convert my own, but that looks easier.

Don't get too excited by the pics of the GPS in operation.. it doesn't work outside of Japan.

Thats alright, I already have a gps, I wouldn't mind getting the MMCS in english though.

So will it play MP3 CD's? How about CDRW's or CDR's? Or will it only play normal CD's?

Gee....they certainly didn't spare any expense when they created that interface, did they.

Couldn't they have added some fancy graphics....after all it was built in the late 90's, not the early 80's.

Looks like it was coded on a Commodore 64 :)

It will prob be the same as the ITEX one... in saying that, I have a copy as well.. :)

The MMCS is a separate slot loading drive from the CD stacker. Both will play CD-Rs, haven't tried CD-RWs, and highly doubt it's MP3 capable but haven't tried.

I'd be happily surprised if it did, but MP3s were only starting to come into popular usage on computer when this system was designed and standalone MP3 players weren't really available back then.

I've run a long headphone extension cable from the TV tuner audio input under the carpet/trim and it comes out in the sunglasses pocket. So I can just plug an MP3 player into that up front, and select the VTR input and it comes out the speakers in stereo.

Regarding the ITEX disc, I wasn't actually sure if that was a translated version or not. Their website is a bit confusing about that. I'd love to get a copy of the English version, if only to have a play around with.

where can I get one of those CD's. Dont suppose some one can give me a copy of one?

Anyone got info on those translation cd's and how much they cost? Im not too good with the reading Japanese.

Here are some pics from a while ago

These pics are Gold! and quite enough for me thanks :)
I have been playing guessing games with the japanese characters on the CD setting, and just managing with the basics. K :P

ps I have a garmin ad-on......so I have working GPS on the screen :)

I bought mine off takumi in Wa. So PM him to see if he can do anymore

I was driving to work this morning and even though I know that the TV tuner should not work in Australia, I decided to have a play and see what I could pick up. Turns out that around here there are a couple of TV stations that you can pick up the audio really well, but of course no picture. But then, for morning talk shows the audio is just fine. The best bit was when they did the live traffic report from today's random location, and I looked out the window to see the helicopter almost above me!

Yeah i get channel 7 in the purple car and occasionally can see a really bad picture. The white car gets channel 7 audio and 2WS radio on the tv also
