What not to modify in the vr4

Thought we should start a thread about the items or mods to try to avoid as sometimes new members have to read tons of pages and then still end up doing it wrong.
I thought I would kick it of by a few basics.
Do not use anything other then SP111 in the auto transmission.
Modified cars avoid running on running on anything less the 98oct fuel.
Avoid using regular octane booster.
Avoid using GL5 in the manual transmission best to use GL4 fully synthetic.
Avoid running a pod filter or run the filter off a straight pipe further away from the MAF.
Dont install a external BOV unless u have upgraded ecu's.
Dont buy bigget then 235/40/18 tyres to avoid rubbing for 17" someone please add.

These are a few of the top of my head of what not to do or what works best ie power/economy/wasted $$$$.

No I meant external venting like a hks or blitz.
I just went back to stock as I installed a 255lph f/pump and blitz bov on the same day and my poor fuel economy of about 19per 100 went to 23.5 per 100 and I lost power.
Spoke to david at rpw if it could be pump and he said BOV.
I stuck the stock BOV back on 2 days ago and already looks like I will get about 17per of this tank if not less and the power is back.

Don't install anything cheap like Autotecnica accessories, playboy seat covers, AXS sear covers etc. :banghead:
Leave those to the Magna's and Corolla's.

Haha good one Dimi

No thousands of brand name stickers down the sides of these cars either !

I did have multicolour LEDs on my tyre valves for a short while ;) When you're driving home late at night, you need something to entertain you !

Long gone now though !

You can see your tyre valves while you're driving??? :p

At the time I had them on, I could !

There was roadwork at night on the F3 freeway which meant there were big sidewalls put up as part of construction. As I drove through, the cycling colours of the LEDs reflected off the sidewalls :) It was like driving through a rainbow :ROFLMAO:

Most importantly, it kept me awake :D

A vent to air BOV can cause problems if the spring setting is too hard or too soft, it can cause the BOV to leak in normal driving and stall at lights. Or of course not open at all.Overall I think Adam's list is quite good and a good idea. I'll let this thread develop for a day or two, then make it a sticky and list everything in the first post.

Hey Guys I mean important not to do's ie mechanical ones.
I like the stickers on the side and if someone wants to install playboy seat covers hey why not if they were signed by the playboy bunnies.
There are lots of other items like I have read that best results have been to use penzoil and amsoil instead of the big brands like castrol/shell/mobil..
I did think of another item which was do not use chinese brake pads as hey fade out really quick so go for the green stuff or someone else can suggest some good pad options.

so there is no need for a turbo tmer?

apparently not seeing as theyre very small turbos

but a timer wont cause any harm, may possibly help if you rape your car into your driveway.im putting my timer back in,just because i can

Our turbos have watercooling so they won't get hot enough to coke up the oil. Even if they weren't watercooled, coking up oil is something that was only possible with old dinosaur oils, it isn't possible with moder high quality synthetics

Because they're utterly unnecessary - they were useful in the days when turbos weren't liquid cooled and suffered from 'coking', where the oil / lubricant in the bearings gets hotter once the engine is turned off (especially if you stop the car right after a spirited drive) heating it beyond it's stable maximum, turning the oil into a sludgy paste... which means the bearings seized up, killing the turbo.

Turbos in modern cars like the VR4 are liquid cooled, thus keeping them well within their 'safe' operating temperature range - you could do laps around a track sitting at 200km/h and stop the car dead and the turbos will be ok... As long as you haven't blown the top tank off your radiator, of course ;)
