What to pay?

Hi Guys,

Been lurking for a while, pretty keen to buy a Legnum after lookng at a few and reading up all about 'em. A family wagon that looks subtle but goes like stink really appeals...

Am a bit confused about how to know what's a fair price to pay... I am looking at a local private sale black 97 auto no leather, no s/roof, abt 100,000km.

What do you guys reckon is fair, as a ballpark figure? Redbook doesn't even list a Legnum! have been looking at sales websites, but prices are all over the shop. Generally higher kays, autos, older cars worth less, but... not consistantly. I'm guessing that if I can import a car myself of a similar age/condition/options and it costs around $11k on the road, that around $12k is fair for such a car already here. Am I way off the mark?

BTW, I currently insure a plain-jane W124 Merc E280 with Shannons but they don't want to know abt the Legnum cos it's not in a garage! 'Famous Insurance' will cover though...just need an alarm.

The Shannons reaction kinda got me thinking - do you guys reckon a stock Legnum is any more a thief or car-jacking magnet that any other performance 2nd-hand Jap import?

Sorry last question... any recommendations for a mechanic in western Sydney to check a Legnum out for me ?

-Thanks, Phil.

My guess is about 14 to 15 thousand for one already here ready to drive away, but they go all the way up to mid twenties. Mine cost about 17000 drive away with warranty 12 months rego and lots of extras that I was looking for..but its a bit exy for an auto cause the extras. You can have a look at member's rides if you want. Good luck they are worth it.

U can import one yourself from 10,000 up to 18-19,000 depending. Manuals, Galants (sedan) are pretty rare so u generally end up paying more. Low km's obviously more again.
Dealer cars seem to range from about 16,000 - 22,000 ...
Have a good search through our forums and you'll see slot of dollars thrown around. Perhaps even talk to our resident importers that loiter around here. Importing can take from a couple of months to 9 months or even more in extreme cases.

Good luck hope u find what your after. Oh and head to to a meet with the NSW boyz and you can touch one in the flesh ...

Simple answer? Between 10k and 20k. Look at the members ride area and check the different options people have picked out, then look at what they paid. You'll quickly learn what price sounds reasonable.

Hey dude,

Welcome to the forums.

The example you gave with 100,000k and not many extras I would not pay more than 13k for. I paid 14.5k for my Galant, 75,000k pretty much stock but rare for the condition it was in.

If you want to save money, you best bet is J-spec or Iron Chef (Kristian) who are both vendors on this site. If time is an issue and you don't want to wait months on end; go to a dealer, but expect to pay 3-4k more and you might not even get the original inspection papers from the Japan agent, which is something Iron Chef and J-spec would scrutinise and make sure there are no nasty surprises!!

Thanks guys. Have been thinking about importing but then if a car's already here... well, much easier. I first started out wanting the best, latest car I could find but then realised I don't really want to spend $20k! I think low teens for an early PFL in good condition is not a bad ballpark target.

I have had a look at a few 96-97s at car yards on Parramatta Road, and I can't see that i am going to spend my hard-earned on one of those cars. It just grates too much knowing how much profit margin is in them.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted...

I gotta say my motivation was ............... not more than 10yrs, less than 70k's Galant and that was about it.
Working in the industry I can tell ya more than 90k's is not good.
I personally wouldn't buy a PFL due to the inaccuracy of klm's represented on vehicles over 10yrs. While I am sure every importer does the utmost to ensure k's are genuine you can never be sure over 10yr's and 60,000k's.
These are however my personal preferances and each to their own, but ya wanna get the least messed with, lowest k's car you can in every circumstance
